Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

This is one of those "art, not science" deals. Just mess with the numbers until the output is something you like.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Is it unnaturalistic for a language to have verbs that only conjugate for the object instead of the subject? I want to make a topic-prominent language with polypersonal agreement where the subject can be deleted entirely from the verb if it is marked as the topic, and the object can be omitted if i...

Re: If YOU founded a country, how would it work?

Seriously though: - 100% voting rights. No voter ID laws, no poll taxes, nothing. Explicitly outlawed in the constitution. Automatic voter registration and automatic ballots received in the mail. (With accessible polling places as well for people without a permanent mailing address.) - No political ...

Re: What are you reading? or What have you been reading?

If they *really* want some quick summaries: The Wolf of the North - Viking dude blusters around a lot. Kinda mediocre. 3 stars. The Hate U Give - A teenage girl witnesses a cop murdering her friend. 5 stars, highly recommended. Ninefox Gambit - Possessed by the ghost of a centuries dead general, a s...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

This doesn't make much sense because the construction is clearly a biclausal one, with the upper verb incorporating the complementizer and eating the agreement of the subject along with it. I can't think of any naturalistic mechanism that could block this whenever the two clauses don't have the same...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Probably the closest to this that's happened is some language where agreement is hosted on a clitic rather than on the verb itself (e.g. Warlpiri) where the subject and object clitics become fused. That's not really what you want though. The closest I can see to something you want that's naturalisti...

Re: The Majestic 4th Conversation Thread

[ˈhoʊ.liː.ˈʃɪt] Actually yes, I do value marriage over other types of heterosexual relationships (like shacking up or friends with benefits kinds of arrangements). I'm sorry you feel that is bigoted, but I do believe your habit of taking this personally is clouding your judgement. Who am I being big...

Re: German Gay Marriage Law & Resulting Discussion [split]

"All people deserve to have the same rights" is not the same kind of subjective statement of personal preference as "chocolate ice cream tastes good." The same way that "I can flap my arms and fly" is not. If you believe that it is, and you go jump off a cliff cause you think you can fly, you will d...

Re: The Majestic 4th Conversation Thread

I really shouldn't bother but I can't sleep and queerphobes make me angry. You say you value heterosexual marriages over other types of relationships because they lead to reproduction. You say you value reproduction because it is the will of Nature and the Divine. A few things you probably perfectly...

Re: The Majestic 4th Conversation Thread

It boggles the mind how some people can think "consoles are better than PCs" and "some people don't deserve to have basic human rights" are even slightly comparable.

Re: The Majestic 4th Conversation Thread

There's some truth to this, I suppose, but the whole point of a debate is to show that the opposing position is not valid. And as I said, rational debate has produced results over the years, even if the progress has been frustratingly slow. Also, there's the problem that we have the internet now; r...

Re: The Majestic 4th Conversation Thread

You are literally attacking people's fundamental human rights and then complaining that somehow, you are the one under attack when they dare to fight back against you. I have no patience for dealing with any straight person's persecution complex.

Re: The Majestic 4th Conversation Thread

If the guy in the noose tells the joke, that's gallows humor.

If the people in the crowd do it, that's part of the execution.
