Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

A Romance structural false friend, that took quite some time for me to get used to: In Catalan, you form the preterite by using anar 'to go' + infinitive, which mirrors the future construction found in so many other Romance languages. C ATALAN va parlar 's/he spoke' S PANISH va a hablar 's/he will s...

Obviously IPA should probably be left alone since it's universally recognized, but if you could make your own version of it, what would it be like?
I feel like this relates to so many of the discussions fueled by our common interest here [:D]

Re: Surprising cognates

Apparently Irish and Scottish Gaelic fáilte/fàilte 'welcome' are cognate with English well and will (which are also cognate with each other)!

Evet! Vikipedi, Türk dilde beş bin Fransız kelimenin olduğunu söyledi. Onların nazal ünlüyi Türkçe’ye uyarladıklar gibi en çok hoşuma gidiyor: Yes! Wikipedia said that there are five thousand French words in the Turkish language. How they adapted the nasal vowels to the Turkish language is what I l...

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

I'm told that in Swedish, :swe: hel "whole" and vete "wheat" are not combined to make a word for whole wheat bread , because if they did the result would be identical with or resemble helvete "Hell". This smacks of one of those "and on the lighter side of the news" anecdotes like Spanish speakers n...

I can't post about phonetic [ s ] without those ungodly spaces, because otherwise, the board's code takes it as a strikeout. Given the heavy Linguistics leanings of this board, can Aszev do anything? If not can he complain to phpBB, because this is a big problem? I noticed the same thing when I goi...

There's also a box to 'Disable BBCode' underneath the field where you type.

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread

Hi, thank you. tbh it feels weird posting with this name, and I havent checked yet if it's possible to change, but I did check to see if "Soap" was taken and it looks like the memberlist here was recycled and/or pruned in 2010 such that any older accounts no longer exist. You can have it changed, b...

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread

Not sure if this is the right thread to post this, but spoilers don't expand when clicking "show" anymore. Does anyone else have the same problem, or is it somehow only happening for me? This has already been pointed out and the mods are already working on it (or at least they said they were). We a...

ENGLISH
- beanie (I've always just used 'hat'...)

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread

I think with some adjustments, it could look pretty good. What I think are the immediate issues are that the spoilers don't work, and it's blindingly bright. We need a dark theme that we can swap to from the user control panel. We're looking at the spoiler function—it should be back soon enough! As...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Swedish has a similar thing to Italian - stressed syllables either have a long vowel or end with a geminate or consonant cluster. Unstressed syllables have short vowels and, as far as I know, no gemination - consonant clusters are possible though, although I think they're less common there. Correct...
