Re: Jokes

And a Leventine Arab joke, from my Levantine Arabic book: Juḥa and his were walking back to Juḥa's home. When they came near, a wind blew one of Juḥa's shirts off the clothes line. Juḥa began shouting "Laḥamdullāh, Laḥamdullāh, Laḥamdullāh!" Juḥa's friend said "Are you crazy? Why are you shouting '...

Re: Jokes

A Jewish Joke I found in my Yiddish book: A beggar once came to the Baron Rothschild's palace. He said to a servant "I must speak to the Baron". The servant took him to the Baron's secretary, who said "The Baron is busy, but he has given me the ability to give beggars from his his charity fund". "N...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

No, bees pollinate flowers. Yellowjackets (and other wasps) mostly just murder things. I learned recently that wasps actually do pollinate, just not very effectively; they themselves eat nectar in their adult morph, but their grubs are insectivorous (which is why I used to think wasps were predator...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

I checked, and I do have "Cape gooseberry" (or "poha", as it's called in my neck of the woods) in Kankonian: yadzaliy . However, my Kankonian dictionary gives the scientific name as Physalis peruviana , not P. pruinosa . Uff. Quite. I asked some horticultural friends, and they tsked me on that one....

Now whether it's by pollination, or some kind of weird Xenomorphic, flower-ovum traumatization, I cannot recall.
XD
Lam, have I ever mentioned that I adore your vocabulary choices?

In English it's translated "Time of the Apes"
Here's the whole hour and a half episode -

Re: How deranged is the English spelling system?

I am a second learner of English, a pretty good one at that, and the English spelling system is the kinda thing that make me wanna rip my eyes out. It seems not only foreign learners are frustrated with this spelling system, but also native speakers. In the couple of past weeks, I researched this t...

Re: What are you listening to/watching?

I have been watching frankly ludicrous amounts of Mystery Science Theater 3000 lately. Which wouldn't be such a problem if I didn't keep staying up until midnight doing it! The episodes are just so long... and sometimes the movies are so aggressively terrible I have to take longer breaks than the h...

Re: What are you listening to/watching?

I know it's very NCNC to do this here, but I'm watching a TV5 Monde program, and watching even the host lose it. Someone voted for this point of view. ¡Calma, calma; que no panda el cúnico! Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! Have a chamomile tea, Bubbele. Promises of a future appearance by Angélique Kidjo ...

Nitrome - Twin Shot 2 (Walkthrough) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l-V8SbN0Fs For no other reason than to listen to the complete soundtrack, with the fun tinny sound effects sprinkled in. My son loved this game to the death, and for me, it epitomizes what he calls "life happening" music. I can now...

Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs

Sorry for the double-post, but I felt like this was sufficiently off-topic. Still, I would like to see if you could craft a word cognate in your Germlang to the :got: lexeme combo --> heitō + saiws + wōds (Else saiws + heitô +wôds) "feverishly wroth like the sea" Why, if I might ask? Do you think i...

Re: Po Polsku

In the Yiddish spelling, it's definitely a /x/. Also I found a romanazation, and the person Germanified it <Chasch>. If the initial sound was the affricate, wouldn't have the person spelt it <Tschasch>? IMO, <Chasch> is the best Germanized romanazation of Polish <Chaś> Todah rabbah! Clearly I went ...

Did *r historically follow the *a which yielded <á>? Alternatively, does <á> come from *au? That being said, I gotta know if /ɐ̯/ is a remnant of *Vr or not haha No to both, I'm afraid.
