Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Just a quick comment on the Korean case. I've seen phonetic studies showing that for many speakers it is actually a distinction in pitch on the following vowel. I don't think this can be nicely linked to "articulatory strength" anymore.

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

In an introductory linguistics book I am reading, vowel tenseness/laxness is listed as a distinct feature along with vowel height, backness and rounding. For the languages I know this property almost certainly seems deftly explained by vowel pitch and duration for non-central vowels rather than bei...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I just discovered today that German has a very unproductive progressive passive that I would really like to see expanded. You nominalize the verb by taking the stem and attaching a schwa. The resulting noun is of feminine gender and gets a definite determiner inside a locational copula construction,...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

We will talk about exemplar based approaches to phonology in a seminar this semester. I'm really looking forward to it. Exemplar-based conlanging might be interesting, too.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

So the answer is more complex than the question I guess. Implosives are really happy about prevoicing, just like prenasalized sounds, so /amɓa/ is okay I guess. For /abɓa/ it's a bit more complicated. If the first stop is released, then the articulation is rather complicated, since you have to chang...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

-Is stress not relevant? It doesn't seem to be marked anywhere. -Is the [i ] in [əi] non-syllabic, or is this a sequence of two syllables? 1. Stress is only marked when relevant, i.e. when it is not predictable. That was my idea. 2. It's a diphthong, but I would actually argue that the schwa might ...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

Hey guys, I justed wanted to mention that I will leave you some feedback only when I will get to post the second round. I will give feedback only on the grouping and maybe the Urheimat, since these are potentially subject to change for each round. I will not comment on your guesses of the proto-word...

Re: unambiguous syntax and grammar

Things in my conlang I am proud of: [...] * valence of words are more or less similar to English, I don't try to put everything in it, only basic and required argument slots; [...] Why is it a good thing to mirror English here? Is the idea to have an arbritary set of arguments for each word, such t...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Can someone explain to me the different voices? I am familiar with creaky voice and probably breathy voice, but what do slack voice and stiff voice sound like? Okay, I can roughly sketch the explanation I got, when I asked a professor, but I cannot pretend to undertsand every detail of it. Disclaim...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

So I went a bit over the top when preparing this challenge, creating about 40 descendent languages, that I all like and care for. Since I thought that might be too much to cope with, I figured I could just split it up into three rounds. In the first round, you will see 12 cognates, in the second rou...

I'm going a bit slower than I thought I would. I was nearly done writing up the grammar discription today when I got logged out and everything was deleted [:'(]. I'll probably be done tomorrow or maybe the day after. Had the same problem several times. I usually write the torch in a .txt file on yo...
