I saw this post from a French-learning page I follow that gave alternate names for languages based on the pattern "la langue de [locuteur célèbre]" (the language of [famous speaker]). So English is la langue de Shakespeare , French is la langue de Molière , Chinese is la langue de Confucius . One of...

The local public TV station was showing "La Bohème", which I'm unfamiliar with, but it was misidentified in the TV listings as "Laurence Olivier- A Life," noting a focus on his post-World War II life. For a little bit I had fun trying to figure out why anyone would make an opera about Laurence Olivi...

I've had a few vivid dreams over the past several nights. I only remember isolated scenes, but I'm writing them down so I don't completely forget them. Dream No. 1: I was attempting to pull my car out of a parallel-parking spot, but the car in front of me was moving back and forth and blocking my pa...

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

I heard a funny coincidence while watching a TV show. A character was getting their formalwear dry-cleaned and they said something like, "Do the cumberbatch, too." It took me a while to figure out they meant "cummerbund", not a British actor.

Re: What did you accomplish today?

I've been watching a Brazilian Portuguese series on Netflix, so today I was inspired to make a greeklang that sounded somewhat like Portuguese, but I didn't really get further than deciding that /ti/ would become [tʃi] before consonants and [tʃ] elsewhere, e.g. κοντινεντι [kɔntʃinɛntʃ].
