Re: What have you been reading lately?

I've been reading La modernité au village. Tignes, Savines, Ubaye… La submersion de communes rurales au nom de l'intérêt général , which is about three French villages that were flooded when dams were built downstream from them. Specifically, I'm interested in Tignes because it would be in my concou...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Can a nominative-accusative language derive from an absolutive-ergative proto-language? Theoretically by making the passive tense into a regular present one, by some other eldritch means? yes, it is said that some Aleut-Eskimo languages are evolving into nominative languages. maybe you can do this:...

Re: each other

The sentences mix and match strategies Silvish has for reciprocals. When the verb is transitive and implies reciprocity (as opposed to reflexivity), just a reciprocal/reflexive pronoun is used, as in the first sentence. When the verb is intranstive and requires the preposition a "to", a reciprocal p...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Semantically, the present perfect allows for another meaning. "I have retired" could in a certain register mean "I have gone to bed". Compare that with "I am retired", which doesn't allow that interpretation.

I'm listening to "Ashes" by Céline Dion for the "Deadpool 2" soundtrack. She's always so sincere and has such a great sense of humor, I can imagine Deadpool being a Céline superfan and her agreeing to do the song just as a favor for a fan. This is the third movie tie-in she's done that I k...

Does anyone else try to research something and then as soon as you ask a question somewhere, your "google-fu" gets about ten times better for that subject? I'm much more likely to experience the irl version of this. Like, it used to be that when I couldn't find something, I'd ask my mom to help me,...

But, anyway, what prompts this question? :wat: In my dialect, there is no such phrase.

Re: How to write an E-Mail

Yes, it means "factory". The German term "Produktionshalle" is widespread because the literal translation of factory - "Fabrik" - more closely refers to the stinking and exploitative factories in industrialism. Hmm, yeah, "factory" can sometimes have similar connotations. I suppose an analog to "Pr...
