Re: Help with Chinese/Japanese character? Please translate

It is most definitely "貓" which Google Translate says is cat. (Not sure if you know this, but Google and other translators have a handwriting option so that you can literally write the character and pick from a list of approximations that best fit what you wrote. It is an awesome feature for determi...

Re: Con-Script Development Centre

Do you have any more examples? I have had similar ideas in the past, and what I end up with is a system in which there are more than one way in which the same resultant character can be created which leads to way more ambiguity than I like. Have you run into a similar issue at all? If not, how have ...

Re: Tloko / Omya redux

The section where you describe the example glyphs (lyao, ntlu...) might be slightly more easy to parse if the example glyph was directly before the text explaining it and not in a block above ALL of the descriptions. There are a few small things like that throughout that could use a bit of moving ar...

Re: How would you redesign IPA?

But isn't that precisely what the tiebar is for? To indicate that though they are a sequence, they are treated as a unit? Much like diphthongs are treated as a single vowel in most situations unless morae or length is sometimes adjusted for them...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

No /m/ is an interesting and noticeable thing... also, why do you use ogonek-o for /o/ wouldn't it make more sense for it to have its natural meaning and give the ogonek to schwa (in this case)?

An interesting inventory, to be sure.

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

There doesn't seem to be much to go on in terms of the inflectional stuff, but I'll try my best to "Germanicize" the phonology and orthography somewhat. No promises that it'll be to your liking, though. For what it's worth, I think you'd be fine keeping it as it is, but if you really want to change...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

Sure! I absolutely am not looking for anything diachronically related or a posteriori . Just a language that gets at a somewhat Germanic aesthetic. I apologize if there was any confusion. Also, I realize that this will in no way be something anyone could confuse for German and don't really want it t...

It just always seemed weird to me that an arrow pointing down is rising: [ǎ] and an arrow pointing up is falling: [â]. Other than that, no good reason.

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

I'm seeking a bit of aid, folks! I had the following inventory for a now defunct conlang that had some glorious clusters and made me kinda happy. However, I can tell that it's not one I will be going back to. (The relevant thread is here , if you want more info about where this project started.) / n...

Re: How would you redesign IPA?

I think I would change the way tones are notated. I'm not sure what the best system would be, but at the least I would make it so that a rising tone doesn't use a v-like shape, but rather a ^-like one, and vice-versa. Other than that, I don't really see much need to change anything. Also, I find the...

Re: why is it that in many fantasy stories, humans are the focus?

I'll answer the question in the subject as simply as I can: Because we are humans, that's why. We know about ourselves, and therefore it is easiest to understand a story about ourselves. Basically, as Sal said above, any story with a non-human race in it might as well be about humans anyway if the w...

I've found that my conlang, Lozkazmat, sort of has a false cognate with English.

:con: Lozkazmat, Jeur'[jəɹ] "You".
:eng: English, You, your.
Since it's a conlang, and you know English, how can you be sure the word wasn't coined as a direct borrowing or somesuch?
