Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

Do you remember, the 21st night of September? Love was changing the minds of pretenders. Drats, where did I leave my sequin pantsuit? ( I love this song, but if I'm honest with myself, I mumbled my way through all the lyrics and then ba-dee-ya'ed it on out at the refrain, be it in a dorm hallway, a...

So as not to derail the original thread: I want to see humanoid insects riding dragonflies. [:D] Speaking of dragonflies, the weather is hot and steamy in Shanghai at the moment, and the dragonflies are out in swarms. They must love this weather. I think dragonflies are a folksy way of gauging barom...

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

Sorry, for the confusion. For me "used in some German varieties" means it's not used in my variety, no matter what is standard. I am also not sure about Briefbeutel . Silly billy -- you didn't tell us how you say "wallet" in your varietal neck of the woods. Personally, I get a little frisson when a...

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

I think Briefbeutel or Brieftasche are used in some German varieties for wallet Brieftasche was actually the word my German textbooks used for wallet. It was only later that I learned no one uses it and Portemonnaie is the main word for wallet now. Me, I''d just adjust to what the folks in the stre...

That, plus Dick Van Dyke, could have influenced my choice. Me, too, I was also thinking Dick Van Dyke. :chn: 巳 sì "sixth Earthly Branch " and 四 sì "four" :chn: 午 wǔ "seventh Earthly Branch" and 五 wǔ "five" Sounds very confusing! Re: What did you accomplish today?

I decided to make the Town Speech/Urban Basanawa word /land̥/ "land" and /gɹʊnd̥/ "ground" share the same Kanji, which is 地...as I feel it might be the best choice considering the semantics. With a little prodding, I was able to get my boyfriend to recall how to say 捉迷藏 (zhuō mí cáng - hide-n-seek)...
