Re: What did you accomplish today?

Why oh why do your posts say "clongo!" For what purpose do you change the abbreviation!? I use “morfofo” for morphophonological processes . Words in -oCo are the best. [xD] I may be a product of my time, and I understand what Des is talking about when he says "morfofo", but when I see it, I can't h...

And the :hkg: is even closer- [mai˧] vs. [mai˧˩]
They are close, I'll grant you, but I believe in Cantonese 买 is fifth tone (阳上, low rising) (so, [mai˩˧]?) and 卖 is sixth tone (阳去, low level) ([mai˩]).

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

Speaking of Chinese, I'm still not very far with learning, but what already confused me 买 mǎi [maɪ̯˨˩˦] - to buy vs. 卖 mài [maɪ̯˥˩] - to sell Not only are the characters similar (which is not so unusual for phono-semantic compounds, but still very confusing for me here), is the meaning so similar t...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

According to Wiktionary the character 殿, which now means hall, originally meant buttocks. How did a change like that take place? 'buttocks' > 'area to the rear of sth.' > 'place where people go during a break' > 'place where people meet' > 'hall', maybe??? Pretty much, I think. Also, consider times...

It is, indeed, a mystery.

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

I think I have a pretty good excuse for why I wasn't able to pick them up in time. In the end, I'm just grateful I'll be able to get there before classes start. This is why I always plan to return to school on Saturdays, so I have Sundays open in case anything goes wrong. A conscientious student su...

Is there a way this one could become even better? I originally wanted a sepia-toned version, but my computer said “nuh”. Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

I'm told that in Swedish, :swe: hel "whole" and vete "wheat" are not combined to make a word for whole wheat bread , because if they did the result would be identical with or resemble helvete "Hell". This smacks of one of those "and on the lighter side of the news" anecdotes like Spanish speakers n...

Re: Yay or Nay?

Lego is singular, it means one individual Lego brick. Hence, Legos. Well in the UK Lego refers to the company/product as a whole, not to the individual bricks. It's just one of those minor differences between Englishes on either side of the pond that really sticks out when it comes up. So to be cle...

Absolutely, we don't see reduplication in conlangs nearly as often as we should seeing how common it is in natlangs . I say incorporate, we don't see enough conlangs with restricted verbal lexica. For my money, what we don't see enough of is just *stuff*. ( Step away from WALS ever so briefly. ) Li...
