Re: Yay or Nay?

It looks like you prefer option 4) [:D] What makes you say that? I haven't really noticed shimo prone to sarcasm, and if the above comment isn't that, I suspect what Creyeditor means is that I stacked the deck/loaded the dice to get the result I wanted in the first place. Perhaps, perhaps not. I wa...

Re: Yay or Nay?

In light of recent events, I found myself going to the Géarthnuns dictionary to see if there was a word for what I, as an American goy, would have called a yarmulke . Surprisingly, there is naught. The word bandied about on the news is kippah (כִּיפָּה), which, frankly, I had never heard before. So ...

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

As for 謝謝, neutral toning that second syllable is, like, so mainland  . My Taiwan dictionary still lists it as xièxiè , making your coincidence all the more unfortunate. [B)] That's definitely good to hear as I almost certainly said xièxiè during my trip to China a few years back... When I st...

Re: 日本語で人工言語と世界を…

As perhaps you know, Japanese simplified characters are simplified differently, and the simplifications are not as extensive or generally as extreme as Chinese simplifications (cf. 廣広广, 傳伝传, 歸帰归 讀読读), and sometimes the differences are quite minor or even identical (cf. 壓圧压, 單単单, 國国国), but outside o...

Re: 日本語で人工言語と世界を…

I originally planned to learn the simplified version for Chinese and traditional for Japanese, but I think I'll end up learning all three/four sets (traditional ones in both readings, Chinese and Japanese). If the prospect of that doesn't depress you to utter distraction, I think this is the right ...

Re: Linguistic purism in conlangs

If Japanese and English are on the 8, 9, 10 scale of things, and Chinese and Icelandic are on the 1, 2, 3 scale of things, I'd put Géarthnuns at about a high 2 to a mid 3. Far more likely to calque than loan outright, but there are loans. One that leaps to mind is bwats , from boîte (de nuit), which...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

What are the differences between a fusional and an agglutinative language? Fusional languages encode multiple meanings in grammatical morphemes, -kio could be present tense, imperfect aspect, conditional mood. Agglutinating languages separate these into multiple morphemes. What else characterizes a...
