Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

For non-native English speakers who may not understand the playground retort, it's (as I learned it): Sticks and stones May break my bones But words shall never harm me Nice playground advice for playground bullying. But words do mean things and the words they engender harm and inform government po...

That, plus Dick Van Dyke, could have influenced my choice. Me, too, I was also thinking Dick Van Dyke. "It's a jolly 'oliday with Mary!" -- not recognizing a little Dutch boy sticking his finger in a dike. ( As an American, I was not aware of this distinction in American spelling ) Oh look, ...

:chn: 巳 sì "sixth Earthly Branch " and 四 sì "four" :chn: 午 wǔ "seventh Earthly Branch" and 五 wǔ "five" Sounds very confusing! Not so much. 午 wǔ normally appears in compounds like 上午 (forenoon), 中午 (noon, 12:00 or thereabouts), 下午 (afternoon), and 午夜 (midnight, 0:00 or thereabouts) (there are others...

cigarette butts ganajdadsüch ← rhüküch them fish víöbsöp ← rhöböch them Hmm, is your gloss correct? It seems to match víöbsöp to DEF . It was not correct. "the fish" seem to have gotten vaporized in the glossing process. It should, hopefully, be correct (and edited above) now. ( A Géarthçins would ...

The obvious answer is a resounding "yes"; you are a valued member of our community and we always look forward to your projects, insights, and comments. The less-than-obvious answer is: "Why are you framing this as a pass-agg question?"

吹 doesn't have "to whistle" as a translation, but "to play a wind instrument". Well, thanks I guess. Well, it wouldn't. The primary translation of 吹 in English is "blow". Winds blow (using 吹), and wind instruments involve blowing, so "blow" for "'play' a wind instrument" is natural, but wouldn't ne...
