Ooh, excellent! I wonder if we can make this even knottier. The noun form of "oversee" is "oversight", which can mean either "supervision" or "omission".
The verb "overlook" has the sense of "look out over" (A hotel that overlooks the ocean) as well as the sense of "not see", "disregard".

Does anyone know why "e" is pronounced as /ə~œ/ in the French alphabet and not as /e/ like every other letter?
What do you mean "like every other letter"?
I took the question to mean, why is it "a, bé, cé, dé, œ" as opposed to ""a, bé, cé, dé, é". Even English has "(a), bi, si, di, i"

Re: He is...

Ok, thanks for clarification, I'd have just accepted it otherwise, now I looked it up. My dictionary Pleco has indeed that meaning of 渔 as fisherman, but as you said, 渔民,渔夫,渔人 are all more prevalent. I'll just stick with 渔民 I think (although I am pretty sure that I'll never need it anyway). I somet...

Re: He is...

:twn: Mandarin 他是個漁。 tā shìgè yú 3s be COUNTER fisherman He is a fisherman. So 'fisherman' 渔 and 'fish' 鱼 are homophonous in Mandarin (yú). Oh, beautiful Chinese. I questioned this back on page 1, and I'll question it again. 渔 (yú) means "catch fish", whose homophony with 鱼 (yú) could provide for o...

Six more weeks of winter, or so I've heard. It cannot end soon enough. Meh, I can wait. We did the snow thing here in Suzhou a week ago, so I've gotten that out of my system. But as long as the water pipes don't burst (a widespread phenomenon here south of the Yangtse two years ago -- an area not a...

Not new words, though I think I learned 逸 only two years ago. But why Sun Yat-sen is Sun Yat-sen in English is new to me. 孙中山, as he's usually known, has an "art name" of 孙逸仙, which in Minnan dialect, would be, like Sun Yat-sen. This may be common knowledge to you younger students of Chinese out the...

Sat through a movie called "The Lost Tree" today. It would've been better titled "The Lost Movie". Oftentimes, you know what you're getting into with a horror movie -- trying to run through a forest in stiletto heels; walking into a room before -- God forbid -- you switch the lights on; getting your...

Why oh why do your posts say "clongo!" For what purpose do you change the abbreviation!? I use “morfofo” for morphophonological processes . Words in -oCo are the best. And the :hkg: is even closer- [mai˧] vs. [mai˧˩]
They are close, I'll grant you, but I believe in Cantonese 买 is fifth tone (阳上, low rising) (so, [mai˩˧]?) and 卖 is sixth tone (阳去, low level) ([mai˩]).

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

Speaking of Chinese, I'm still not very far with learning, but what already confused me 买 mǎi [maɪ̯˨˩˦] - to buy vs. 卖 mài [maɪ̯˥˩] - to sell Not only are the characters similar (which is not so unusual for phono-semantic compounds, but still very confusing for me here), is the meaning so similar t...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

According to Wiktionary the character 殿, which now means hall, originally meant buttocks. How did a change like that take place? 'buttocks' > 'area to the rear of sth.' > 'place where people go during a break' > 'place where people meet' > 'hall', maybe??? Pretty much, I think. Also, consider times...
