I would like to participate, but I’m afraid I don’t know what conlang I’m going to be using.

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

Did you think of any origin path for the front vs. retracted fricative pairs, or are they simply an aesthetic choice? I’m afraid not, as of yet. I tend to think of the features I want first, and then I think of excuses diachronics for them if I grow fond enough of the project to warrant the effort.

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

Today I had the idea of having two sets of coronal fricatives - dental and retracted - in Limestone. That gives this: /p t k ʔ/ p t k ’ /p’ t’ k’/ p’ t’ k’ /s̪ s̠ ɬ̪ ɬ̠ x/ s z l ł x /ɾ j w/ r y w /a i o u/ a i o u Fricatives cluster very frequently with stops, both before and after. /ɬ̪/ might very ...

I want to see humanoid insects riding dragonflies. [:D]
Edit: Speaking of dragonflies, the weather is hot and steamy in Shanghai at the moment, and the dragonflies are out in swarms. They must love this weather.

Re: What did you accomplish today?

Been playing around with diphthongs in Limestone. The vowel inventory is /a i o u/ and most combos are allowed though the components in a diphthong must either agree in height (±high) or backness (±back). The possibilities then are as follows: ao oa ai ou ia uo iu ui I think it’s likely that either ...

How large is an adult dragon? Is a dragon typically ridden by a single person or many?

Does everyone in your setting have a dragon? If not, how common are they? And who chooses who gets to ride one?

My first week of university is over and it's been rather exciting. I'm taking Introduction to Severn Ojibwe as a part of it and now I can almost ask y'all to pass me 12 bannocks in it. Re: What did you accomplish today?

Feels very iroquoian... not that that's a problem. Interesting! The last few iterations of Limestone are actually very much inspired by Pawnee. The geminates are remnants of its Blackfoot-inspired infancy. The rs rx rw ry are probably there because I liked rC clusters in Núta. What exactly reminds ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I searched for such a natlang for some time, and I am not sure if I found a really good example. One analysis of Chacobo is pretty close with /ɯ/ for /u/. The same is true for Iloko . Tatana and Tiwi are 'purer' examples, but still 3 inventories out of 74 four-vowel inventories in Phoible is really...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I’m wondering if anyone remembers a natlang with the vowel inventory /a i o u/? I’m (almost) sure I’ve seen it, but I’ve been unable to confirm this. Some reconstructions of proto-Japanese vowels posit /a i u o/ from earlier /a i u ə/. Kaxararí has /a i ɨ o u/ which makes me think /a i o u/ is perfe...
