Re: The Esseintial Núta Blog

Proto-Núta My current ideas for Proto-Núta look something like this: *m *n *p *t *k (*f?) *s *x (*H?) *r (*j *w) *a *i *u *ə *j *w are largely just positional allophones of *i *u . As you can see, I’m not sure about the fricative inventory as of yet. However, there was probably a laryngeal phoneme ...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

I tweaked Núta diachronics somewhat by deciding that Proto-Núta had a vowel inventory of /a i u ə/ instead of the standard five-vowel system I had originally envisaged. The schwa then goes on to elide or become either of /e o/ in Middle Núta according to a number of factors, including the following:...

Núta - Jan 19 twekhí·reku n.anim.* cockroach *The ending -u would suggest this noun is animate. I haven’t decided whether insects are actually considered animate in Núta, but if they are not, the word-final -u might simply be a part of the stem. Thanks to Znex for inspiring the word form, and a lit...

My Nakarian lexicon has reached 70 entries. Not much, but it's something.

Great avatar, Thrice. :)
The Núta Lexicon has 25 words, disregarding plural formations and variants.

Re: The Esseintial Núta Blog

What does this language consider a "voiced environment"? Probably this: when neither adjacent segment is ‘ s h or word-final position. As a result, the stops would only be voiceless in clusters with those sounds or in word-final position./ What about /k/ and /t/? Aren't they voiceless too? Yes, or ...

Redefining Glides They turned out to be (semi)vowels after all... This is probably not worth it’s own post, but I feel the need to clarify the status of w y in Núta before going on to the next stage in this thread. It is probably unnecessary to posit phonemic /w j/ in Núta as all surface glides can...

Nakarian - Jan 16-17 hang - tree (core word of class 8) vyohang [vʲøhaŋ] - forest (tree+prefix of class 12) banìvohang - orchard (forest+prefix of class 7) I like the look of these. [:D] I’m in the mood for coining words at the moment so I’m going to join this thread temporarily. Núta - Jan 18 twın...

Why oh why do your posts say "clongo!" For what purpose do you change the abbreviation!?
I use “morfofo” for morphophonological processes. Words in -oCo are the best. [xD]

Re: I need more phonemes!!! Help!

You have no less than 12 consonants, which is plenty. I wouldn’t add too much as I think it looks quite nice as it is, but if you feel the need, all of Kiwikami’s suggestions are spot on. The glottal stop especially would make this very attractive to me. Note that complex phonotactics could make thi...

/m n/ /t k ʔ/ /h/ /r w/ /a i/ Circumflexes should feature somehow. Obviously /k ʔ/ ⟨k k̂⟩ ← that’s a combining diacritic, this forum’s font is bad. Interesting. Thanks for the idea, but I’m almost certainly going to be using â î . Didn't you post that in the chat as well? Cuz that's what I meant. Y...

Is a chicken stable the same as a chicken coop? If not, what's the difference?
A chicken stable is for very large chickens. You know, the ones you ride. Some people call them “horses”, but that’s just silly.

Re: Yay or Nay?

I think it’s highly unlikely for “most or all” verbs that come in intransitive/transitive pairs to have suppletive forms because there are likely to be thousands of such verb pairs in any language, especially if you allow for normally transitive verbs like “to see” to become intransitive. However, I...

I'm thinking of making a change to certain Shonkasika neuter nouns, inspired by Slavic languages. There is an overlap in consonant stems and î-stems ( /ɪ/) in that they inflect the same for all forms, except the indefinite nominative singular, which is -î for î-stems and -∅ for consonant stems unle...
