Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

Rearranging the Sōkoan consonant inventory this morning yielded this: nasal m n ŋ plain p t t͡s t͡ʂ k voiced b d d͡z d͡ʐ g aspirate ɸ tʰ t͡sʰ t͡ʂʰ h~x sibilant s ʂ lenited β ɾ ɣ glide j This is fun for several reasons: - the fricatives /ɸ h/ now pattern with the aspirated affricates and not with the...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

So if I have /a ə/ as my only two vowel phonemes, I'm guessing I'm gonna need a fairly large consonant inventory to make up for the small vowel inventory? I know I can have allophones as /e i o u/, but they only occur as a part of palatalization and labialization. My current consonant inventory is:...

Re: La Ziunga: a taste of a romlang

I’m intrigued by several things: 1) Many nouns seem to have shifted from feminine to masculine gender, that is if il is masculine and la is feminine. I cannot see any phonetic motivation for this, so I wonder if it’s due to influence from a contact language? 2) The sound changes seem complex. Initia...

Never heard of Çuvvaccoçim. How old is that conlang?
It’s one of Linguifex’s if I’m not mistaken.

Consonants for something still in its earliest conception: /m n ŋ/ /m̥ n̥ ŋ̊/ /ᵐb ⁿd ⁿd͡ɮ ᵑɡ/ /p t k/ /ʰp ʰt ʰk/ /ɸ θ ɬ h/ /l j/ To be served with 5 to 7 vowels and their manifold diphthongoid spawn. Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

In my conlang Manchi, stops have a five way distinction. Voiceless, voiced, voiceless aspirated, breathy voice stops, and prenasalised stops. How realistic is this, and what should i change? Osage has a five-way distinction in labial stops. There are a handful of other languages that have five or s...

Something nice and symmetrical, based on a gleb phonology (the retroflexes are my own).

/m n ɲ/
/ᵐb ⁿd ⁿd͡ʑ ⁿd͡ʐ ᵑɡ/
/b d d͡ʑ d͡ʐ g/
/p t t͡ɕ t͡ʂ k/
/ɸ s ɕ ʂ x/
/r l j w/

/a i u ɯ/ + length
or
/a i ɨ u/ + length

Google Translate stuff Great idea, Reyzadren! [:D] gestaltist - Nakarian = Yoruba DesEsseintes - Núta = Igbo Two closely related languages in succession. Interesting. It's... really weird, but I could scrounge up at least tenuous precedents for all of its gaps/outliers from various languages around the world. It actually seems a bit Iroquoian. I agree re the Iroquoian feel. Tuscarora with a Cheyenne-inspired v instead of w. I could definitely get behind this. It...

I like the idea of using the complement form as a noun directly without a further nominaliser a lot.

“The one swimming saw the one from the mountain.”
etc.

Proto-Plains has the following inventory: /p t s ł k χ ʔ/ /p’ t’ t͡s’ t͡ɬ’ k’ q’/ /m n l j w/ /m̰ n̰ l̰ j̰ w̰/ (/χ/ is the uvular fricative if it isn’t displaying correctly.) Syllable structure is CVC with any non-glottalised (i.e. neither ejective nor creaky) segment allowed in coda. In its develop...

/i iː u uː/
/a aː/

The length distinction between vowels only occurs in the stressed syllable. Syllable structure is (C)V(F), where F is one of /h n ɾ/, or alternatively any consonant may occur geminated intervocalically.
Lovely.

Re: Non-pulmonic consonants

I think a lot of conlangers toy with ejectives, implosives and clicks. Currently two of my conlangs contain ejectives. TLFKAT has an ejective counterpart to every plain stop and affricate, labialised or no, for a total of 28 phonemic ejectives. Ejective vs plain is the only distinction in stops ever...

A vowel harmony idea I just came up with. Plausible? Not sure. It seems intuitive.

harmony class I: /i ə/
harmony class II: /ɨ o/
neutral: /a/
Start off with /a e i o u/ and harmony between /e i/ and /o u/, then e u → ə ɨ.

And yes, it feels good.

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

Having grown a bit tired of Núta after the relay*, I’ve been toying with TLFKAT over the last week or so. I have many ideas about the morphology, but in the beginning I was convinced that I was satisfied with the phonology, which hadn’t changed since mid-2016. *I still fully plan on returning to it....
