Re: Shàt scratchpad

Introduction to Converbs: Converbs in Shàt always have to be bound to a finite verb which take the person/tense/voice (though the later category, ussaully doesn't affect the converb's mean. It is semantics-sensitive). This means if the two verbs have different person/tense/voices, the converb has to...

The French "language", if it can be called that. It's just a string of uvular trills and nasalized front round vowels: Average French sentence in IPA: [ʀỹʀø̃ʀỹʀœ̃ỹʀʏ̃ʀœ̃] Er, I'm not a huge fan of the way French sounds myself, but... standard French doesn't actually have any of those sounds. :wat: ...

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

Speaking of Chinese, I'm still not very far with learning, but what already confused me 买 mǎi [maɪ̯˨˩˦] - to buy vs. 卖 mài [maɪ̯˥˩] - to sell Not only are the characters similar (which is not so unusual for phono-semantic compounds, but still very confusing for me here), is the meaning so similar t...

Re: Utha: My Latest Conlang

It strikes me as a bit odd to have pre-aspirated and aspirated voiceless plosives without plain voiceless plosives. Also, as was pointed out to me in my Shàt scratchpad, having retroflexes without a palatal(ized) series is barely attested.

:hkg: 功夫 [koŋ˥fu˥]"Kong fu" 功課 [koŋ˥fɔ˧] "Homework" Note that the auslaut (Pinyin) -ong is actually more closely pronounced as [-ʊŋ]. Um.....This is Cantonese, not Mandarin, thus the Hong Kong flag. There is no Pinyin. The Mandarin reflex of 課 is kè /kə˧˩/ not [fɔ˧]. If it was Mandarin,I would have...

The Non-Finite Binyans do not inflect for person or tense. Binyan X: The Adjectival Binyan This Binyan is placed here, before the Converbial Binyans, instead of with the Verbal Noun and Infinitive at the end, as Shàt grammarians (wrongly) associated it with being an extension of Binyan II, some (als...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I thought it was often called the South-Asian Sprachbund, but upon googling I found only Indosphere. You might be confusing it with the SE Asian Sprachbund, which consists of Sinitic, Austroasiatic, Tai-Kadai, Hmong-Mien, Karen, Chamic, Lolo-Burmese and maybe some other Tibeto-Burman branches that ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questi@ons go here

@Shemtov : Personally, I like Option 2 more, but both systems look likely. Yeah, I'm leaning toward Option 2 myself, since Shàt has a lot of influence from both the Dravidian and Indo-Aryan langs (especially the former) and I know they use a similar system for their non-infinites, though the Indo-A...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

My language, Shàt, has biliteral roots and converbs. I want a way for a converb that connects to a verb with a different subject to take the mood-voice-person from a verb that is not the existensial verb. I've come up with two ways of doing this: 1. Empty root. A "Light" or "Vector" verb. A root wit...

The Noun: To show the dual, I will use examples that come in natural pairs, though the neuter example's as such comes from Usczyksky's regime, and using this word in the dual has the same status in post-Usczyksky Slovaria as the Swastika in Modern Germany (Basically, only in educational, historical ...
