Re: CBB Conlang Relay X

I think the first ring is complete as much as it can be now, unless someone wants to add a different language.

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Fortis/lenis at least is usually used to describe a consonantal distinction that can't be plainly nailed down to the plainer distinctions of aspirated/tenuis or voiced/unvoiced for instance. Consonant length or quantity is one common feature denoted. Hittite is one language that is known to complete...

Re: Guess the Word in Romlangs

You got it! Samde Chabrijne , or "Caprine Saturday", means "Witches' Sabbath". I recently learned that the word in Spanish, aquelarre , seems to be derived from a Basque compound of "buck, he-goat" and "meadow". A lot of the basic ideas of the "Witches' Sabbath" show great inspiration from pagan Ba...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Tense/lax have some meaning and are certainly relevant to more languages than just English (the distinction easily corresponds to other Germanic languages for instance; the bias is perhaps because of the sheer quantity of vowel phonemes compared to other language families) as opposed to more clear d...

The face of 4-and-2 has changed quite a bit since I last wrote in here, so I'm just gonna go through a quick revision of what I had already plus some new features that will be expanded upon again. First off 4-and-2 is now known as Hawntow [ɸɐ̂õ̯n(ə̃)tǒː] I wonder if you can guess where I got the nam...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Does anyone know how common retracted [s̠] is in the world's languages as a or the main allophone of /s/ or /ʃ/ (whether expressed apico- or lamino-alveolar)? I understand it was fairly common in medieval mainland European languages, where in some cases it was kept distinct to denti-alveolar /s/ and...

KIT /i/ [ɪ] DRESS /e/ [ɛ] TRAP /æ/ [æ] modulo GenAm æ-raising, which is arguably phonemic because æ was raised differently (to [æi̯]) before [ŋ], but this no longer applies, so novel æ + [ŋ] sequences can be -eə̯ŋ- rather than -æi̯ŋ- (bank [bæi̯ŋk], Bernanke [bɚˈneə̯ŋkɪi̯]) LOT = PALM STRUT /ʌ/ [ʌ]...

What's with the <eglwys> "Church" stuff? I looked it up, and I can't find any syntactic or semantic use for it. I don't remember, honestly, but I thought I read something about "church mouse" being a symbol of humility in Welsh. "llygod eglwys" {church mice} comes up a few times, googling it again.

Chinese 車 and English wheel , it is possible that the Chinese word was ultimately a borrowing from a word for wheel from Indo-European languages Posts like this would be more interesting if you include the pronunciation. And the translation. Bing thinks it means “car”. They also gave a pronunciatio...
