Re: Conversation Thread of the 3rd SPAM!

I knew a JW in high school, *think* he was an Indian kid but I could be confusing two people. Anyhow either way he didn't really bring up the subject at all. Vaguely reminds me I used to be good friends with this really nice and friendly Mormon guy back in middle school, still keep in contact with h...

Re: Conversation Thread of the 3rd SPAM!

Romanticism in and of itself is just a bad idea. Look at how the Western Knight has been romanticized vs. the reality. I like it...sometimes stories have to be a little idealistic. Not everything has to be gritty and realistic. Sometimes chuunibyou is fun. That's not what I mean about romanticism. ...

Re: Conversation Thread of the 3rd SPAM!

It's more that I think samurai - or, rather, the romanticized portrayal of them that's everywhere these days - are overrated. Objectively maybe their armor is cool maybe not, but people just looooooooooove their magical/mystical/Oriental stereotype/one-with-nature-the-spirits-whatever samurais and n...

Re: Conversation Thread of the 3rd SPAM!

I like horses only when they're used for world domination and when people in cool armor are riding them. Samurai, by the way, don't count as people in cool armor.

Also, I ended up wasting that extra hour anyways because I woke up when I normally would've. :mrred:

NaNoWriMo

So NaNoWriMo's coming up in a couple of days. I know a lot of us here are into writing, so anyone trying it? For those who don't know, NaNoWriMo's this thing where you try to write a 50k novel throughout the month of November. Some people who take it more seriously than I do things like join forums ...

@sangi39: Nice map, though I assume a more finalized version will have more naturalistic island chains, right? (I do that too in my map drafts)

Re: Greatest conquerors in history

Real "conquerors" don't exterminate their conquered populations; rather, they get the vanquished to serve them (in addition to going about their daily lives). It's often important for the tribute/tax/share taken by the conqueror to go almost unnoticed by the vanquished. Often, also, the conqueror m...

Re: Conversation Thread of the 3rd SPAM!

I was thinking about my spider-conculture, and thought I'd make it a totalitarian dictatorship. The question is, how oppressive (politically, economically, socially, culturally, intellectually) it can be, and yet remain more or less stable over time. I don't have much fleshed out yet. I don't reall...

Re: Conversation Thread of the 3rd SPAM!

Triconsonantal conlangs can be very rewarding. It's also easy to hide easter eggs/random references too. Haha, I like how that's one of the big things for you about tricons langs. An open question to all: what sort of references to things do you hide in your langs? I like naming roots after people ...

Re: Conversation Thread of the 3rd SPAM!

Well, I rememer you saying it's very easy to make a "noobish" tricon lang, especially if you don't have any diachronics. Also, it's really easy to make a highly unrealistic tricon that's too regular. That much is very true, but you don't always need to make things 100% realistic. 75% realistic is g...

Re: Conversation Thread of the 3rd SPAM!

Dammit, everytime I see articles on Semitic Roots, I wanna make a Tri-con lang, but then I remember Micamo's admonitions against such an act Q_Q One day though. I make too many langs though >_> Triconsonantal conlangs can be very rewarding. It's also easy to hide easter eggs/random references too.

Re: Conversation Thread of the 3rd SPAM!

Would anybody of you want to live in his conworld (if you had one)? I suspect this would be more likely for those of us who have conworlds based on our personal ideological, political, cultural, etc. ideals. As for me, I guess I wouldn't mind living in a few of the societies of my conworld - at lea...

I'm supposed to be paying attention in an earth system science class since it's very relevant to conworlding, but I'm not.
