Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

Do you mean in terms of work or are you asking how to change subject? If you're asking about the kinds of subject you'll do, it really varies depending on the uni. For example Cambridge is quite strongly theory-heavy (and Generativist theory at that), while other universities are more concerned wit...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

I'm thinking about switching my major to Linguistics. I'm currently in my 2nd year of graphic design, and it's not what I hoped it would be. Changing my major to Linguistics would mean changing my school, too. Is anyone here a linguist? What do you do exactly?

Re: Euterpe: A world of sign language

not arbitrary? so, if I hold up two fingers, you can tell me what that means? :) Well, I guess cultural context plays a role in understanding a sign. Sign language is only very slightly less arbitrary than sound. Note that even when onomatopoeias are possible, they're still not very useful, because...

Re: Euterpe: A world of sign language

Just popping in to say that I’m enjoying this. [:)] Good to hear! Universe Sandbox 2 . I highly recommend it. Yeah, I already have it, and it's pretty cool, though I've found it difficult to use with my own values for things. Did you just painstakingly go edit all the things in the program? Yes, bu...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

I've had a map of my conworld for a long time... However I don't have much interest in the whole conworlding aspect. Would anyone wanna help me out with some climate stuff and river placement and the like? Should I make a thread? I would be interested in seeing a thread. I would probably be more of...

Re: Euterpe: A world of sign language

I've been working on plate tectonics today. I'm pretty happy with how they look. The one big difference between Euterpe's and Earth's plate tectonics systems is that Euterpe has many more plates. Here is a map of the plate tectonics in equirectangular projection. The arrows represent movement. You m...

Dashing through the snow on a pair of broken skis. Over the fields we go, bashing into trees. The snow is turning red. I think I'll go home instead. Duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh I don't remember the rest! But no really, I don't remember the last two lines, a devastating loss for the Ameri...

Re: Euterpe: A world of sign language

I have a couple of thoughts as feedback. First, communication will always tend toward the comparatively easiest way. I speak with my mouth because it's much easier to do that than drop or put down whatever I am doing in order to sign. I see that your people can't easily vocalize, so that is a start...

Euterpe: A world of sign language

Euterpe https://i.imgur.com/ayQ2Pbr.png Planet Euterpe, with its moon Musike in the distance In a Nutshell: Euterpe /juˈtɝpi/ is a conworld idea I've been working on for a while. The main purpose is to create an intelligent species that communicates primarily through sign languages. Disclaimer: I'm...

I just found La Roux, and her/their music is amazing! [<3] It's synth pop.
My new personal favorite is :yout: Colourless Colour.
Of course I can't forget Tigerlily or Bulletproof.

Re: Random Conworld idea thread

I had a similar idea. One interesting aspect is that there might be a special 'spoken language' for blind people [:)] That's a good idea! By necessity, conversations would only allow one person to talk at a time. Why? Well, I guess I didn't think about it enough. My thought process was that you don...

Re: Random Conworld idea thread

I've been nerding out about sign languages recently. Turns out there are a lot more similarities between spoken language and signed language than I thought! They even have phonemes, which for sign languages, are meaningless hand shapes, movements, locations, and orientations that form meaningful wor...

Sevish, a microtonal music artist. I think it's really cool, like learning a new language for music. Once you get used to hearing all the new notes, that is.

I just read this thread for the first time, and I have to say, this is really cool! I especially like the 4D aspect of the world, and the biological information. Also, that blender Niotian is interesting. I don't really have any constructive criticism or questions, but it looks great so far!

Re: The Majestic 4th Conversation Thread

Off topic, but I seem to remember someone (maybe elemtilas?) using a synonym for "take a gander." It was an unusual expression. Something like "have a skiffy." I don't remember the phrase though. What was it, if anyone remembers what I'm talking about? Have/Take a shufty? Afaik, it comes from the c...
