Re: I'd Like to See Phonetic Irish

Well I also know that <aoi> like in Caoimhin is a velarized /ii/. Actually now that I think about it I could see how <ao> becomes a velarized /ii/ if the blackness of the /o/ shifted to the consonant and /a/ would have become a schwa and get deleted.

Re: I'd Like to See Phonetic Irish

I mean even if you stick to the rule of broad to broad and slender to slender, it's still hard to tell which of two or three vowels actually gets pronounced.

That could be an applicative construction, whereby an oblique argument is promoted to direct object, or circumstantial, where an oblique argument is promoted to subject.

I like these, they have a Greco-Roman feel.

You could try translating these commissive statements:

Re: What did you accomplish today?

Vrkhazhian now has modal pronouns:
https://www.frathwiki.com/Vrkhazhian#Modal_Pronouns

ʾAt ṛ-ḳaẇna ḳaḳat ʾažkul.
And the sky shall fall / "and I promise that the sky will fall"

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Is it possible for words for gendered children types be derived from a generic, gender neutral term + a gendered plural ending, like: wasa "child" > wasan "girls" / wasin "boys" > lexicalization, loss of singular form, and reanalysis > w(a)sana "girl" / w(a)sini "boy" yana "sibling" > yanan "sisters...

Maybe a language is just a dialect with an army and a navy.

I'm not sure what case to put the actual recipient when an applicative turns a ditransitive like give into tritransitive because my language is secundative.

I gave him a book because of John (made me do it)= 1-NOM John-ACC give-APL book-INSTR 3ms-???

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Huh? Why? The point of the applicative is that the semantic role of the object is marked on the verb, so that the verb CAN be in the plain accusative. That's why I can't have distinctive applicatives without some additional affixes markers. With just an applicative there are many situations where c...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

I'm pleased by how much of my Introduction to Linguistics course feels like review [:D] I guess I knew more about this subject than I thought. I owe most of that to conlanging, that's for sure  It is the same for me for my Intro to Bioanthropology and Archaeology course that I'm taking rig...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

1) I have defined the interrogative proforms in Vrkhazhian: https://www.frathwiki.com/Vrkhazhian#Interrogative_Pronouns_and_Adverbs As one can see, the question words are nouns derived from the verb '-l-m "to ask about [something]". The pronouns decline more like nouns and they can also have non-pro...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Well, I've realized that I couldn't really derive a causative from an applicative voice because an applicative promotes an oblique object to direct object.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

1-NOM 3-ABL run = I run away from him 1-NOM 3-ACC run-APL = I make him run That's not an applicative, that's a causative. Perhaps I was making too great of a leap. I looked at applicative solely as a valency increasing process. Of course, you could use applicatives to form causatives. Although I am...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Well I had come up with these, which show there there might not be a very clear distinction between an applicative of superlative and a causative 1-NOM run = I run 1-NOM 3-ABL run = I run away from him 1-NOM 3-ACC run-APL = I make him run/I outrun him 1-NOM 3-ACC run-APL 1-ABL = I make him run away ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Instead of having causative voice and reflexive voice, I decided Vrkhazhian will have an all-purpose applicative voice.

How might I get cuasative or reflexive behaviours using an applicative construction?
