Re: Music in my con world, how about yours?

- and I'm working with an instrument that uses string harmonics. Without harmonics, you can just put the burden on the player to slightly adjust the notes - to remember to not QUITE play a third above G to get the 'right' sort of B-flat, and so on. But harmonics only work with exact low-integer rat...

all they do is rub their wings together to make music. they're bug people after all.
But unlike actual bugs, since they're people, they could also devise and play actual musical instruments. They could perhaps also sing to the accompaniment of their wing-drone.

I don't know if this belongs here but I wanna ask, in my world, the main races are mainly humanoid arthropods of different kinds and a few of them can produce silk. what impact would this have on society? Well, you mentioned the obvious in your world's thread: slavery. What the nature of this slave...

Silkworm slavery . . . interesting!

Q: can we see a good / finished image of the Butterfly people you showed us the sketch for? I think I like them best of all so far.

On the other hand, the wee bugfolk could simply breed and ride smaller tortoises. This would make a perfect war juggernaut for some wee small Antfolk battalion!...

Re: naming languages: is it that freaking hard?

My ex was asked for directions to there by an Australian couple who read it as /lu:gəbəru:gə/, or something along those lines [:P] There's nothing sounding more like an Australian town than Loogabarooga though [:P] Well, I've learned there is a Loogabarooga Festival . In Loughborough, of course!

They're horrid even by English's standards! /kɑksən/ /ˈɡʌnəl/ /ˈfoʊkˌsəl/ Don't forget Loughborough [:P] Ha! I mangled that one entirely! [o.O] Who would have guessed part of it rhymes with gruff...

Re: how can offspring affect the hierarchical power structure among witches?

It is highly unimaginative and lazy at best to copy/paste the cissexist assumptions of our own society without examination, and assert them as literally true in your own world. At worst, it is complicity in something evil. If that were the case, you may be right! Then again, lazily copying anything...

i tried going for a pattern but i ended up with words that were hard to pronounce. for example. Sorve Dossa Loltu Dyklo Nizga Titmu Hihpa Lanzy a few were easy but some i didn't know what to do with. They all seem very straight-forward to me. What are the issues that you don't know what to do with?...

Re: how can offspring affect the hierarchical power structure among witches?

If they reproduce sexually, then intersex individuals exist. Sexual characteristics and endocrinal development are extremely complex and multi-modal and it's simply not possible for a species to exist where all of its members fit cleanly and naturally into strict male/female categories. For the pri...

Re: how can offspring affect the hierarchical power structure among witches?

I personally would stay far the fuck away from any story that tried to sell me on its world working this way, because it unthinkingly replicates a lot of really ugly ideas about gender that our society unfortunately subscribes to. Perhaps all the more reason to tackle it! To say that Sharad9 is "un...

Actually, from Egypt they went back to Scythia, before wandering in the wilderness for 440 years. They only became known as Milesians after acquiring (the top side of) Ireland - because Míls lead the invasion, because he was the brother of Íth, who had been killed in Ireland. 440 years! Undoubtedly...

So, after Michael from Vsauce/Dong's rendition of a super long list of Prime Numbers, I ebbed into higher dimensions, allowable geometric solids in various dimensions, and then into something sort of simpler: mathematical powers. Specifically, 1) Are there shorter (one-word) versions of "to the fou...

How do you say "starring Fred MacMurray" in Coptic? I don't know if enough vocab about actors/acting/theatre have survived. Might need to snicker-snack a :grc: loanword (which Copts did way too much anyway in the NT). Or calque something like they do in Spanish telenovelas con la participación de '...

Re: how can offspring affect the hierarchical power structure among witches?

In my story's world, witchcraft is a respected institution, with the most powerful practitioners being at the top echelons of society. Due to this, society traces its lineage through matrilineal lines. Witchcraft is exclusive to the female line. Ritual magic involves using the mana of the world and...

Can a Measure word system be started by requiring that the appropriate demonstratives be put between the number and noun? Is the second construction even attested? If not, what would be needed in a protolang for a MW system to develop? Perhaps if the demonstrative is, in some way, governed by the l...

Although I agree with Sal’s point, I also think that a children’s anime is a fine and respectable ambition. So I wish you luck. I think this is a good start to whatever your goal is.
