Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

It's been a really long time! But hi, I'm back, if anyone remembers me (and I don't blame you if you don't). Here's a wee little unnamed something that's mostly serving as an exercise in morphology right now: /m n/ m n /p t ts tʃ k/ p t c ç k /f s ʃ/ f s ş /w l j/ w~u l y~i /i ə a u/ i e~o a u Some ...

Milloznet / Murronian

şanje Milloznet / the Murronian language Background Murronian is spoken in the Grand Duchy of Murrony, a magitech constitutional monarchy full of vast steppes and ancient forests and bustling industrial cities and pseudo-independent werewolf communes. I'm currently developing it for a D&D campaign ...

[wow] This was a bit of an undertaking to read through, but thanks so much for taking the time to type all that up! I wish this forum had a like button because honestly I don't just want to respond like "yeah, very nice" everytime, but yeah, very nice. And thank you for the reassurance re: friendli...

Re: Gender discussion thread (featuring: an actual trans per

[very long and good post about things I agree with] You are very, very right here, with pretty much all of this. I admit to having simplified the OP a lot because quite frankly I am not that good at explaining things! I apologize if I did come off as genderist (a term which I'm not too familiar wit...

Re: Gender discussion thread (featuring: an actual trans per

Sex is definitely not the same as gender, and sex is not merely about one's genitals. Of course; if we want to get really into semantics, biological sex is merely two sets of characteristics that tend to pattern with each other. Having larger gametes usually coincides with producing estrogen, havin...

Re: Gender discussion thread (featuring: an actual trans per

There's a difference between a name and a pronoun. A name is a significant part of one's identity, a pronoun is a little grammatical word used so we don't need to use his/her name every time we want to reference them in speech. Besides, I am never going to call you "he" or "she" when talking to you...

Re: Gender discussion thread (featuring: an actual trans per

I can definitely sympathize with gender abolitionism, and I agree that it's a largely useless and often harmful social construct. But just because something is unpleasant or outdated doesn't mean you can just ignore it, because society is almost entirely against you in that regard. Also, convincing ...

Gender discussion thread (featuring: an actual trans person)

Hey y'all, after skimming through the (now locked) shitshow that was the "Gender" thread, I thought it might be my patriotic duty as a trans woman to get some things cleared up. I realize I have absolutely no reputation or authority on this board, and so obviously don't treat this as a mandatory inf...

It can be for entire words, too, yes. However, unless you're comparing orthography to phonology, I'd say you don't really need them.

Comanche does, as well as several other Amerind languages around those parts, but AFAIK they're not analyzed as phonemic.

Re: The History of the Greater West

This all is very cool! I'm really conceptually fond of Simonism, not only for its strangeness, but also because Mary Magdalene being an object of worship is far better than our world's Catholic Church casting her as a whore. I just wanted to mention that a political union between South Arabia and Ca...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

So, I'm thinking of adding pitch accents to my language. The low pitch (à) represents creaky voice. Could I have high vowels for the high pitch where phones like and only exist as the high pitch variances of /e/ and /o/ and are marked as /é/, /ó/, etc? That seems unlikely; AFAIK, there is no correl...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

My main concern is whether it's possible to have both /θ/ and /ɬ/. Now I've always loved /θ/, and only recently have I managed to properly pronounce /ɬ/, so I'm at a big dilemma here, as I believe they would logically merge historically. Icelandic has both /θ/ and /ɬ/, and their /θ/ isn't even dent...

Make a [k] sound, but shift the position of your tongue forward slightly so that the blade of your touches your soft palate instead of the back of it touching your velum.

Re: Ciphers into Conlangs?

But what if you did something more radical. I'm not talking about just substituting written language characters- what if you actually used a phonetic cipher on english, then change how the grammar is arranged. Say you change word order, and/or turn prepositions into postpositions, glue particles on...
