Re: Lextreme2018

Nakarian - Jan 19 Let's have some fun with this one. The changes in the word go like this: /ɸaʂra/ "to attack" > /hahra/+back harmony "to fight" > /haara/+back harmony + making preceding vowel checked "to wage war". haara intransitive verb "to wage war". This stem triggers back vowel harmony on aff...

Re: Grammuary 2018

Nakarian 19 I've decided there will be decidedly less marking on the participle and the light verb than I initially envisioned. Instead, auxiliaries will be added after the light verb to provide additional TAM information. Subject agreement will be added to the last verb in the chain. So, a simple ...

My Nakarian lexicon has reached 70 entries. Not much, but it's something.

Re: Grammuary 2018

Nakarian 18 As the middle voice is used for situations with an underspecified subject, it is also shown in grammar: the only argument of a middle voice verb is set in the Accusative. E.g., "girl-ACC MID-wash do-C2" = The girl bathes/washes herself. This gives me a natural way to have a subjectless ...

I like the look of these. [:D]
Thank you! I had to add the allophony /o/ > [ø] before palatals to be satisfied with those.

Re: Immortality, Zombies, and Vampires (Yantas, Magic, and Gods)

Loving this, especially this part: The reconnection has to be maintained, with the body continuing to decay, albeit at a slower rate, and the soul does naturally start to "drift". I'm imagining a half-rotten Genghis-like conqueror ruling over half of Yantas for three centuries with human sacrifices ...

Re: Grammuary 2018

Nakarian 16-17 1. There are three verbal participles divided by voice: active, middle, and passive. 2. The passive voice is valency-reducing (duh), and the agent can only be added via noun incorporation or further valency-altering operations. Otherwise, a passive sentence is treated like a normal i...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Sounds like you may have gone a bit overboard with the closed class. I feel like something like "to speak" would qualify in even a small inventory of verbs. Maybe. To be fair, there is apparently one natlang that has no more than three verbs, at least according to the Wikipedia article about parts ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Hey all. I come to you with a conundrum regarding a new project I want to start working on. I want to begin working on a personal conlang, for my own personal use and not as a part of my conworld. This relieves me of the constraints of naturalism to an extent, but I still want to do things right. I...

Grammuary 15 - Nakarian I decided a few things about expressing feelings: this will be one exception where the light verb "to feel" can act as a content verb taking the noun describing the feeling as its direct argument otherwise verbs expressing feelings will be prototypically intransitive and won...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Curious, what do you guys do to come up with interesting semantics? I often struggle to come up with unique, multifaceted and nuanced definitions for my words. I'm also considering them from a historical perspective. I use the conlanger's thesaurus and Wiktionary to help but it's still tricky. I al...

Grammuary 14 - Nakarian Nakarian shall have four core cases marked with suffixes: Nominative (unmarked), Accusative (-e/-ạ depending on vowel harmony), Dative (-h/-ha (the latter after closed syllables), Locative (-vo). After applying morphophonetic rules, this gives a range of surface forms, espec...

Re: I need more phonemes!!! Help!

You have no less than 12 consonants, which is plenty. I wouldn’t add too much as I think it looks quite nice as it is, but if you feel the need, all of Kiwikami’s suggestions are spot on. The glottal stop especially would make this very attractive to me. Note that complex phonotactics could make th...
