Re: Po Polsku

Sorry for speaking English here, but I figure this is probably the best place to ask: does anybody know what the Polish surname Chaś means? I don't speak Polish, but I did a quick search in a few dictionaries and nothing came up (except on Wiktionary, where it just says that it's a surname and does...

Today I finished working with an artist who made a series of pictures of people from The World. Five queens of various countries in the Eastlands.

Certainly blows my poor pen & pencil sketches out of the proverbial water!

Re: What did you accomplish today?

Theoretically, Old Tirina has geminated consonants. Practically, there are so few words that include them that they might as well not exist. I am giving serious thought to doing away with them for future words. I'd keep them, declaring them a relictual feature or only coming from borrowings or some...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I think Lao Kou is joking/being hyperbolic. Thank you. I was going for exaggeration ad absurdum. That said, our Tanti seemed to be perennially in her 90s, from the time I was a toddler until my teenage years. Always clad in a black shroud. To hear my father tell it, many years later, she told him t...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

But our family's "Tanti" was about 175 when I knew her as a child (a gypsy witch -- her, not me), making her about 215 when she crossed over Sorry but what? That'd make her the oldest known person in history by a magnitude of almost 2. Not sure if you're using licentia poetica or if you're trolling...

Re: Speedlang VIII (May 4, 5, 6)

Ok, finally found a moment to clean up my sketch. I spent a good few hours on this: Khuugl Consonants The language has no phonemic semivowels. Unvoiced consonants are voiced between vowels which is reflected in the romanization. The POAs are as follows: Labials: /p b m f/ + [v] = <p b m f v> Denti-a...

Re: Speedlang VIII (May 4, 5, 6)

I love everybody's entries. :) I must say this is exactly the kind of languages I wanted to see when I set the rules. Hope to see some more still. I also made a sketch and will post it when I have some time to clean it up.

Re: Project 4-and-2 Scratchpad

Cool, I always wanted to make a vowelless language. If I may make a suggestion... Have you considered adding epenthetic vowels in addition to C>V allophonies? Perhaps a simple schwa that assimilates to a neighboring consonant or something.

Re: Speedlang VIII (May 4, 5, 6)

High Fedrelar (now archaic, used more for naming) had stress on final syllable of nouns and on the penultimate syllable of verbs. (I avoided dealing with other parts of speech by trying to cut out adjectives and making all other parts of speech one syllable only.) The variation in prosody was one f...

Re: Speedlang VIII (May 4, 5, 6)

OK, I have defined the rules and I'm not sure if I'll have the time to pop by during the weekend so here it goes: I have felt for a long time that prosody is a topic that a lot of conlangers ignore or don’t really work on, so I want to make it central to this speedlang. I don’t want to be too restri...
