Re: How would you redesign IPA?

On the vowel chart I would make the same adjustment that Frislander also wrote: make /æ/ the front and /a/ the central low vowels. This is basically how I see the letters used anyway though. I would bring back the affricate letters ʦ etc, leaving the tiebar as an option for rare affricates (not enco...

One hour challenge - Da Vinci Quote

I ran this challenge on a conlanging chat, but I figured maybe some people here wanted in on the fun. The challenge is this: Within one hour, create a conlang sketch sufficient to translate the following text idiomatically: Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes ...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

If you/whoever divide(s) it into 3 groups like that, then it depends on your/the author's definition. For example, trigger systems are definitely syntactic-based marking based on the usual morphosyntactic alignment categories, but your definition/explanation above seems to exclude it within any cat...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I myself don't see the particular distinction you make as being of any use. It appears to be circular and not lending itself into anything meaningful. It doesn’t come from me, the syntactic vs semantic based marking (which I don’t see any circularity in) comes from Dixon, he has an entire chapter a...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

So there’s syntactic based marking like good old nom/acc and erg/abs and the likes, where some NPs are cast to S/A/P which then receive case marking as appropriate. There’s semantic based marking, where this intermediate step is skipped and nouns are marked based on their semantic roles (agent, pat...

Re: Thoughts on Problematic Stuff in Mesak

Next up: derivational morphology. I lied. I can’t really think of a way to make an interesting forum post on derivational morphology anyway, and I’ve kinda figured out what I wanted to in the meantime. However, another thing has come to mind that needs some working on, and that is the writing syste...

Very curious this, considering the Japanese sh-, j- and ch- series are alveolo-palatal.

From what I hear here (Switzerland) there is a distinction between Linguistics and Applied Linguistics and I’d reckon SLP would be in the latter.

Re: The worst sounding natlang ever

I find Pirahã to sound utterly repetitive (not surprising with the tiny phonological inventory, but even then seemingly every second syllable has /ai/ as the nucleus. Never liked the sound of Spanish very much, can't really pinpoint why. And while I love me some clicks I've yet to find a recording o...

Re: Thoughts on Problematic Stuff in Mesak

I really like your way of presentation.I have a question though. What is the pragmatic effect of your antipassive? Is it used for indefinite objects and things like that? This might have a bearing on your problem, IINM. Its main use is simply to feed the pivot, or to allow omission of the direct ob...

Thoughts on Problematic Stuff in Mesak

Yes, I know I have a thread somewhere on here that already has some Mesak stuff in it. But iirc it also has things on Naksult’ and UPK in there, which no longer are part of the same conworld, and it’s such an old thread that it’s probably full of misinformation anyway. So I’m just making a new one. ...

I used to have that problem; now I kinda have the opposite where I never feel like working on new stuff (even though it would be interesting) and would rather just go back and add details to Mesak and its world.
