Re: Linguistic pet peeves

There is this paralinguistic thing that really annoys me. People often produce alveolar or palatal clicks when they pick up talking or when they're in the middle of a longer conversational turn. I never really noticed that in the past, let alone attributed any meaning to it. But now that I started p...

Re: Rumhängethread

What's the difference between Traum and Träum? Traum is usually a singular noun, translateable with English "the dream". Träum can be a bunch of things, most likely the imperative of "träumen", "to dream". "Träum was schönes" - "Dream something nice". The diphthong in Traum is similar to that in En...

Re: Linguistic pet peeves

What bug me most is that people always seem to think they know better - even if they clearly don't. That is a general problem with the humanities. With "hard" sciences and technology, it is usually generally accepted that some people are expert on the subjects and others don't know anything. But ev...

Re: Linguistic pet peeves

I thought it was kind of funny as a joke; it kind of bugged me when people took it so seriously (both people who thought it was a serious issue of spelling reform and those who posted a ten-page linguistic essay to "debunk" it). Actually it's influenced my conlang. The word ghos means "fish" and th...

Re: Linguistic pet peeves

a pretty decent description of "guttural" is any velar or further back consonant This is true, and it is usually a sign of cluelessness or insensitivity towards different languages. I once read Gary Gygax' extraordinary book on names or however it was called, in which he claimed that /x/ in German ...

Re: Talk on Conlanging

By the way, a tongueless race would very well be able of producing labial sounds ;) My bad. Lateral sounds? tap/flaps? Basically, they wouldn't be capable of producing anything but labial and glottal sounds (at least the way we know them), because the human tongue is involved in almost all speech s...

Re: Talk on Conlanging

I'd put something in about how they develop and split into daughter languages. Something about families of languages. I'd also put something in about creating phonologies whilst taking biology into account. For instance a tongue-less race would not be able to create any labial sounds and so on. Tho...

Talk on Conlanging

Hi everyone. Next monday (the 18th of July, 2016), I will have a talk on conlanging in my university class on fictional languages. I want to talk about the process of constructing a language: Finding a goal and setting it into motion, coming up with phonology, morphology, syntax and all that jazz. I...
