Also note the weird transliteration of the Akkadian, because that's something to bear in mind when we borrow these words.

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

OK, diachronic sketch time! *p *t̪ *t *c *k *m *n̪ *n *ɲ *ŋ *w *ɹ *j *i *iː *u *uː *a *aː Syllable structure was CV(n), where *n assimilated to the POA of a following plosive. The apical consonants *t, *n and *ɹ did not occur word-initially, and *t likely had a flapped allophone when occurring as a ...

Re: How would you redesign IPA?

I would shift /æ/ and /a/ so that they are now the true open-front and open-mid vowels rather than the stupid English-centric situation we have now.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I hate to do this, but: What effects can consonants at POAs further back in the mouth than velar (in other words: uvulars, pharyngeals/epiglottals, and glottals) have on surrounding vowels? I know, for instance, that uvulars can cause lowering or backing, and I believe I've heard that pharyngeals c...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

In natural speech though (outside of highly formal RP) I don't think anyone pronounce the coda in words like "strengths" with all 4 consonants. My natural pronunciation actually reduces it to something very like [st͡ʃɹɛŋs]. However, if you're looking for languages which definitely have more complex ...

Re: CBB Conlang Relay IX

I know I'm very late, but now it's becoming clear that I should have enough free time next week, so: Can I still join? You could simply put me at the end of the chain, unless either Dormouse559 or Frislander wants to specifically translate out of one of my languages, then I could jump in earlier to...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

Here's a little diachronic phonology I've cooked up somewhat inspired by Samic. *i *u *ē *ea *ō *oa *a~ā Only *i, *u and *a occur in non-initial syllables, and *a does not occur in initial syllables, therefore *ā and *a are in complementary distribution and should be considered as allophones. And th...
