Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

Núta Núta is my latest pet sketch. The consonant inventory is pretty much exactly Mohawk/Oneida - and Proto-Northern-Iroquoian - if ts kw are considered clusters. The vowels are fewer in number though, and there are no nasal vowels. /n/ n /t k ʔ/ t k ‘ /s h/ s h /r/ r /j w/ y w /a e i u/ a e ı u Vo...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

Two phonologies I've been sitting on for a while, one I'm thinking of making a neighbour of the Lyran family. /p t k/ /tθ' t' ts' tɬ' k' q' ʔ/ /θ s ɬ ʁ h/ /m n l r j w/ /m' n' l' r' j' w'/ /e a ə əj~i əj'~iʔ əw~u əw'~uʔ/ Syllable structure is also very Salishan, with sequences of glottal stop and ob...

Re: Modern Lyran (NP: Slots +7 through +10:)

I was originally going to do a post on some more verb stuff, but I was reading my posts so far and I realized I never fully explained the word class distinction and the subtleties of verb transitivity, so I’m going to do that in this post. This post will be somewhat random and unorganized, but I jus...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

In a follow-up to my previous phonology. /t̪~θ (t)s (t)ɬ (t)ʃ k~x/ /t̪’ t͡s’ t͡ɬ’ t͡ʃ’ k’ ʔ/ /n r j/ /i a o/ in mid, high or low tone. Syllable structure is CV(C), where any consonant may appear in the onset or coda, except that /j/ may not appear after /i/. The plain plosives/affricates are realis...

Re: Game: Let's Reform English Grammar

Creaky voiced/ejective consonants create low tone on the following vowel, along with final and intervocalic /h/ and /ʔ/. Sequences of consonant and /j/ and before /i/ palatalize, which then assimilate other consonants in the same word. The dental fricative and clusters of it with stops become a dent...

Re: Modern Lyran (NP: Slots +7 through +10:)

Okay, so I have a post on nominal modifiers coming up, but it's been slow going since I lost some of the work I've been working on, but I've done some work on the ancestors of Lyran. I've finally figured out the phoneme inventory for Proto-Lyran, something I've been working on for a couple months, b...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread

Minimalist inventory I thought up after reading about some Khoisan languages. It has 12 non-clicks and 40 clicks. /p~β~w t~ɾ k~ɣ~j q~ʁ ʔ/ /tsʰ~s kxʰ~x~h qχʰ~χ/ /k' q'/ /m n~ŋ~ɴ/ Voiceless unaspirated stops are voiced to approximants word medially, while affricates fricativize word medially. The /x/ ...

Morphohphonology: A Rewrite I've been growing very dissatisfied with the morfofo I've made for this language, so I thought I would change it to make it more appealing, and also to lay out the rules since I've been applying them really inconsistently throughout my sample texts. I've also gutted the ...

The Proto-Western Family and Wìhajǫ̀nę̀ (Old)

The Proto-Western Family and Wìhajǫ̀nę̀ I’ve been taking a break from working on my main conlang Lyran and have been doing some diachronic work on a family I had an idea for a while. This family, which I’m calling Western since I can’t think of a better name, is heavily inspired by the Algonquin an...

Re: Yay or Nay?

Ok, so in my language Tasaqi, I have a large inventory of postural verbs, which indicate locatives depending on the characteristics of the object. For example, "I am at the store." is "I stand at the store.". These verbs commonly get grammaticalized to indicate imperfective aspect, so I am thinking ...

Small edit, the harmony system between velars and post velars is now being changed to a progressive system, where the first element in a word changes all after it.

Ok, so I understand the basics of how tone systems form, but how could a language lose a tone system, aside from simply merging the tones?

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Sorry if this question is too complicated to ask, but are there any good ways to get a good phoneme frequency for a conlang inventory. I've been playing around with awkwords for my conlang Lyran, and I can't figure out what order all the phonemes should be in. Help would be much appreciated. Here's ...
