Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I'm working on my first real conlang, and I was wondering if my consonant inventory seemed reasonable. It's a language for my own personal brand of orcs. I know labials are extremely common in natlangs, but I've decided not to use any both for a distinct style and because they're harder to pronounc...

Re: Arabic Dialects Thread

Question: Is the vowel epenthesis mentioned by Davush universally applied, or is it applied at the phrase level, e.g. if /wlkbi:r/ were preceded by a word ending in, say, /a/, would /wlkb/ necessarily be broken up?

Re: I'd Like to See Phonetic Irish

To a point, might this end up looking a bit like Manx, especially since you've been spoilt by Welsh?

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Is it possible for words for gendered children types be derived from a generic, gender neutral term + a gendered plural ending, like: wasa "child" > wasan "girls" / wasin "boys" > lexicalization, loss of singular form, and reanalysis > w(a)sana "girl" / w(a)sini "boy" yana "sibling" > yanan "sister...

Re: No verbs?

Kēlen is the name of a conlang which has only four verbs, and therefore verbs are a closed class and thus quite unverblike. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kēlen It can be said to have no verbs at all.... Sotomayor says that the language is perfectly naturalistic in all ways except that it has no v...

Re: Advice for Omyatloko

I would like some advice, please. I have 351 glyphs but I know some them will rarely be used, and I realize I lack glyphs for words that are more common. So, I've been mapping my glyphs to the Kyōiku kanji in an effort to get basic, common words but I think I may be missing the mark. Should I look ...

Re: Words to mean Friend

朋 is a pictogramm of a bird that used to be pronounced identically to the word of friend, according to wiktionary. Why does that bird look like two moons? Apparently... I guess the best term might be "calligraphic coincidence". Some suggest it started out as a character for two strings of cowry she...

I am up for it. Just give me a few days more. As shimo said: RL and stuff.
No worries; take your time!

Skálmöld's new album should be playing here, 4 days ahead of its release, on one of Iceland's radio stations, within the next five minutes. I've only just stumbled across the news, so I'll be there listening [:D]

I'm actually more than happy to pass this back to you again, Shimobaatar, unless you want to wait until you win another round, in which case I'm happy for literally anyone else to have a go. I wanted a go, but I don't think it's fair that someone else can't have a go at coming up with a challenge gi...

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge

I need to go over this a bit more when I have time, but as a preliminary guess I'm going with something like *ˈkʷroin.na.his Well, uh… that's actually spot on. The word in the protolanguage was [ˈkʷroɪ̯n.na.his] , the only difference being how we transcribe things. Would you mind posting the proces...
