Re: Other Creativity

I remember a discussion about Warhammer a while back (some years now, I think) where the hobby was disparaged pretty strongly... naturally, I've taken it back up! :D

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

Yeah, it's just mostly a case of bigger numbers these days. My tower has plenty of room to upgrade still, because I'm neither a lottery winner nor insane enough to buy a top spec machine for casual gaming. When I built mine, I was offered a triple GTX-980 SLI... enough resolution that I'd need three...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

So, what's special about a $1200 gaming computer? Generally, a PC intended to be good at gaming specifically will have a beefy GPU (or several SLIed), a fast ethernet connection and possibly an SSD. Otherwise, it's no different really from other higher spec PCs: more RAM, more processing speed (be ...

Well, I bought a $1,200 gaming computer. Better be worth it.
Even if you don't end up playing that many games on it, it so is.

Re: higher pergentage of land?

It depends on the distribution of the land, but, generally speaking, that's true. That said, arid and semi-arid regions are capable of supporting larger populations of people than the equivalent surface area of ocean. If the goal is more people/civilisations then that's the best strategy. When I mad...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

So, my Facebook spat up this quote from the Conlangery podcast today: 24 April 2012 at 20:59 · "I should say 'gender' not 'sex' as my Thai grammar has a section devoted to what transexuals should do." "Yeah, I've heard Taiwan has a large number of interesting shows." "Yes... and a rich vocabulary to...

I figured 'what better way to get back into conlanging that translating some of my favourite books?'

Woop woop! Congratulations Janko [:)]
I'm now curious as to how many conlang number systems he's memorised. I know he has some of my older ones (that.. won't have aged well).

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

English (slang): smashing -- good
Gàidhlig: 's math sin -- that's good

For a long time I was convinced this was a borrowing, but apparently I was wrong... though being a popular folk etymology, it seems I'm not the first to have been so.

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

I'm not exactly Ms. Rowling's greatest fan, but you made me curious... Slytherin, Pukwudgie (I've only read the main series of books, so I don't know the significance of this), 13" hard vine-wood with dragon heart string core, and a buzzard. I guess I'm partly justified in using hydras etc. as perso...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

This strikes me as rather slipshod "journalism". Ah, now that is common for the UK. ;) (I'm aware Yahoo is American owned.) At least going by how he's talked about it, and talking to a couple of South African friends of friends, at least under Apartheid, when Trevor Noah was a child, he was conside...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

Puts me in mind of the time I watched a Trevor Noah stand up show with my girlfriend. (Bit preachy at times, but funny guy.) He was doing a bit where he claimed he likes to play 'Spot the Black Person' in really white countries, like Scotland, in this instance. Trevor: "There's one! No, statue... Th...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

Based on a few posts I saw recently in another thread, I've been wondering something. How many of you aim to be able to pronounce your languages? For me, it's a non-issue. The languages I create aren't meant to be spoken/used by any real people, only hypothetical ones, so it doesn't matter if I can...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

Why would you - as an about 50 year-old man - put your arm around a 17 year old girl you've never seen before and ask her if she wants to kiss you? Or why would you go into the women's bathroom and start saying sexual thing to a girl that only wants to go to the toilet? Asking a stranger for a kiss...

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

The problem with the SJWs isn't that their pet issue doesn't exist, or that it needn't be addressed, it's that they exaggerate the scale of the problem and overact to non-issues as a result.
Sadly, there are actually assholes out there.
