Speaking of red and white, random thing I heard on the internet: Japan's flag resembles a red spot of blood on white panties.

Re: Buddhists?

Actually buddhist crusaders would be fucking awesome! Buddhist Crusaders... Buddhist Templars... "WE KILL HEATHENS IN THE NAME OF THE BUDDHA WHO TAUGHT US NOT TO KILL!" "YOU MUST PROMISE NOT TO KILL OR WE WILL KILL YOU!" "DIE, INFIDEL, OR CONVERT TO BUDDHISM AND NEVER KILL ANYTHING AGAIN!" The iron...

Re: Is the Altaic theory generally accepted or not?

If you go to Russia, I think, it is generally accepted. In some other palces, in Finland for example, it is strongly rejected. Hmm. Is there some political/historical reason behind this? Quite possibly, though I don't know why. I know in China for example some of the language groups in SE Asia (Tai...

Re: Buddhists?

Plus, historically, there were Buddhist rulers who forced people to convert to Buddhism or DIE BY THE SWORD. Which I as a Buddhist think is hilarious in an ironic, dark comedy sort of way: "I BRING YOU THE RELIGION OF PEACE AND NO KILLING, VOW TO NEVER KILL IN THE NAME OF BUDDHA OR ELSE I WILL KILL...

Re: Why do most conlangers dislike digraphs when romanizing?

Funny thing is most Vietnamese who are fluent in Vietnamese can read Vietnamese fine without the diacritics based on the context (sort of like that thing you've esen online where English is written without vowels and you can still understand it). Heck, even I, despite my somewhat dubious knowledge o...

Re: Why do most conlangers dislike digraphs when romanizing?

How necessary are the weird consonant spellings if you want to cover both Southern and Northern Vietnamese with the same orthography? Not too weird at all, in my opinion - the only major distinctions that need to be made, as in those that are noticeable enough, are few; the only ones I can think of...

Re: Why do most conlangers dislike digraphs when romanizing?

Also, I really hate Vietnamese's love of diacritics. Diacritics are eviillllll they make my eyes bleed! :mrred: But what might it look like without them? This is actually making me think about how it might look I think the tone marks are fine and necessary, but some of the vowels could really use a...

Re: Buddhists?

Also, interesting and random factoid: Buddhists can be religious fanatic jerks who kill people because they're not Buddhist. It happened, and still happens! Way to go, Buddhist jerks, ignoring the Buddha's first and most important precept, "Don't kill." That's always one thing that has bothered me ...

Re: Why do most conlangers dislike digraphs when romanizing?

I have to agree with you. I love digraphs, though mostly because when I'm typing it is much easier. This. Seriously, it's so much easier. Diacritics are a pain to type up, even with special programs or whatever. Also, I really hate Vietnamese's love of diacritics. Diacritics are eviillllll they mak...

Re: Buddhists?

One monk I've met (he was a white dude, in case anyone's wondering, but he's been a monk for a long, long time, so he definitely isn't one of those types who pursued Buddhism as a fad - at least nowadays), said that he felt that the original Buddhism was more like a system of psychological therapy, ...

Re: Buddhists?

Of course, it could be argued that English needs to simplify its spelling of loanwords and just spell them the way they're pronounced instead of slavishly following the original spelling - but I believe that's a debate for another time and place . how is denyin oneself pleasure because loss of pleasure is pain and avoiding pain is Good sexy? i know, criminally oversimplifing it, but still I see it as deep feeling of pain and pleasure, not negation of feelings.
