Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

It'd depend on how the rest of a phonology is spelled, IMO. For example, if you didn't have /l/ then <l> would be a good way to write /ɭ/, but it wouldn't work if you had both.

Re: The Dalar: Culture, Biology, and Other Things I Think Of

Started writing up more extensive details about the dawin system on the dalar wiki . Still got quite a bit I'd like to add (about the history especially). It also uncovered a rather serious issue in the voting system... I've always said that families vote as a bloc--that is, the family submits who t...

Nope! Feel free to present it however you like. Sometimes people start with an overview of their world, sometimes they start with maps, sometimes they give us short stories or other bits of prose. Anything is perfectly fine!

Have you no access to libraries? Many libraries these days also offer ebooks, so if you have a library card, you could look into getting ebooks if you don't have transportation to the library.

Re: What did you accomplish today?

I've been continuing my phonological analysis of Old Tirina, and after a lot of faffing about in a spreadsheet, here are some conclusions I've come to: Theoretically, Old Tirina has geminated consonants. Practically, there are so few words that include them that they might as well not exist. I am gi...

Re: How Do YOU Create Words?

Unfortunately I don't have an answer for how I decide a particular word feels right for a particular meaning--I go where the spirit leads. (by which I mean, I just sorta pick one. Sometimes I'm like, yes! This is a beautiful word and my subconscious thinks it fits. Sometimes I'm just like, well, I n...

Re: why is it that in many fantasy stories, humans are the focus?

^^ If you try to please everybody, you're going to end up pleasing nobody. Write what you want to read, and there will probably be some form of audience for it. (assuming your goal is "to make stuff I enjoy and other people might enjoy too". If your goal is purely "get as large of an audience as the...

Well, let's see, the Protheans in Mass Effect are somewhat buglike, aren't they? I should think most people relate just fine to Javik (although like most Mass Effect species, he's arguably just Sal's "human with a hat"). Certainly plenty of people have sympathy for the rachni, myself included, and t...

They're sort of answers to two separate questions: "What do you do for a living?" "Oh, I'm retired." vs. "Do you still work for Llama Corp?" "No, I've retired." Like shimo says, "am retired" focuses more on the state (I am in the state of retirement as opposed to the state of job-having), while "hav...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

Started analyzing phonotactics/syllable structure for Old Tirina. The language is kind of a mess, so I'm trying to use what I already have to come up with a better understanding of its phonology and especially to do better word generation (especially if I'm going to be fleshing it out more). Right n...

Re: How Do YOU Create Words?

I do the following: 1) Design the phonology, and a bit of morphology 2) Plug the phonemes and syllable structure into Awkwords 3) Copy and paste the results into an excel document (well, the OpenOffice equivalent), remove any duplicate words until I have a total list of around 20,000 to 30,000 mono...

Re: How Do YOU Create Words?

I use a variety of methods, but because I prefer to create words with etymologies, I frequently use this method: First, I try to come up with a plausible etymology. I might look at Old Tirina/Old Azen for an appropriate root, but if I can't find any (or want to create a new root), I often look at Wi...

Ha, just realized I never actually posted what I thought about Infinity War! Without spoilers, I will say that I didn't expect it to go at all the way it did. It was very much and very obviously the first half of a story--I saw somebody say on Twitter that they were really excited to see Infinity Wa...

Re: Gender-based family lines

I can’t see a story much longer than about two pages being premised on a system that’s provably unstable. Or, maybe, I can’t see a saga-sized novel or series set in such a conculture. Whyever not? A society in upheaval and the middle of social/cultural change sounds like a fascinating place to set ...

Re: What are you listening to/watching?

Gonna see Infinity War tonight! I'll have to post my impressions here afterward.

What I'm expecting, however, is something that's a bit formulaic, but still thoroughly enjoyable (as are most Marvel movies at this point). This is in no way a flaw.

Re: The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

I saw a cute bearded dragon in a pet store the other day and thought of you. [:D] I was in the store for an adoption event (with cats and dogs), and one of the dogs was just fascinated by all of the small animals they had in the store--the lizards, the ferret, the bunnies, and especially a parakeet....
