Re: (C&C) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Well, basic googling shows that yes, 1:3:6 resonances are possible, but looking at the articles they seem to mean the opposite way around (i.e. those numbers being frequencies rather than periods). That would mean, in terms of periods, 1:2:6. That is, the inner moons are an octave apart, while the ...

Re: (changed forum) Is Hebrew a Conlang?

Thanks. From what you sent it says that Proto-Semitic is "hypothetical," so it sounds like it does not provide a clear way to check the size of any spelling or grammar gaps between Torah Hebrew and antecedent languages. It's a reconstruction based on comparing words and grammar between the Semitic ...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

I have two new sentences documenting serial verb construction in Onschen: ӈахеша туӈпаԯат иліоке. ӈа-хеш-а ту-ӈ-паԯ-ат и-ліок-е. NFUT -go-1. ABS 1. ERG - NFUT -catch-3. ABS PL -fish- ABS . AN I went fishing. (lit. "went caught fish") ӈахеша ӈамоха. га-хеш-а га-мох-а. NFUT -go-1. ABS NFUT -sleep-1. A...

Re: (C&C) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Ultimately, the only real way to answer that question is to plug the numbers into a simulator and set it to run and see what happens. Well I put them in a gravity simulator but all the moons I put in it start flinging off the planet within less than a year, even if I give them stable orbital resona...

Can you point me to the immediately antecedent languages to the Torah text, so I can look at how different (and similar) the grammar and vocabulary is? https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:List_of_Proto-Semitic_stems https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proto-Semitic_language https://en.wikipedia.org/w...

Re: (changed forum) Is Hebrew a Conlang?

Well you talked of Gematria, but it's not unusual for languages to use letters of the writing system to indicate numerals. Glagolitic and Greek did it. Biblical Hebrew has very clear origins from older languages (e.g. a descendant of Proto-Canaanite which is itself a descendant of Proto-Semitic) tha...

Re: (changed forum) Is Hebrew a Conlang?

It's not really constructed because it still uses Biblical Hebrew as a base in lexicon and grammar and took things from Yiddish to fill in the gaps. It's also got native speakers (and has for a while now), which definitively makes it a natural language. Biblical Hebrew itself is definitely a natural...

Does a language with polypersonal agreement need to mark plurality in them to be naturalistic? Are there attested languages with polypersonal agreement that mark only person and not number?

Re: Conworlders' religious influences on conworlds

but I recall how Ahzoh's Vrkhazhian conculture had a lot of macabre fascination with death (at least in the past, I'm not sure if he's changed it since). No, not in the same way. The Empire of Vrkhazh is now a lot like India; the people don't all believe the same things, though there are some key b...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

What are some ways for a language to develop lateral vowels? From what I can tell, either they can't or haven't developed in any natlang, or I've misunderstood the term. I had to google it, but I can only find it in two contexts, 1) as a synonym for "front vowels" used predominantly amongst singing...

I don't think it would be weird, though perhaps the Inuit words would be more prestige.

Re: What did you accomplish today?

I have decided upon a set of phonotactics that I think truly reflects the character of Onschen. The basic syllable structure of a word is (C)(C)V(C). The onset of a syllable can be null, any consonant, or the clusters сц, шч, сл, слі, хл, or xлі. The nucleus is always a vowel. The coda of a syllable...

What consonant clusters can I derive these three clicks /ǀ ǁ ǂ/ from?

At the present, I've got:
/ǀ/ < /t̪k/
/ǁ/ < /t̪l/ or /t̪ˡk/
/ǂ/ < /t̪ʲk t̪ʲkʲ t̪kʲ/

I tried those three you suggested and they're too big to work, especially at an angle. Angular now seems like a requirement too otherwise it would look out of place. However I think I have found a solution.
