How to get rid of perfectionism

Post by CrazyEttin » Fri 11 Mar 2011, 18:42

Long story short: I'm trying to create an island for speakers of my conlang (I like the idea of having a history for my conlangs, it makes them feel more alive), and i've made literally hundreds of different designs of the island. The problem is, i think none of them is good enough. The problem is made worse by the fact that i study geology: Even if the island would look just fine to non-geologist, all i see is a geology that couldn't exist in real world.

What a problem. I drew an Amán map about five years ago, and I have probably lost even it. Only imagination is perfect.

If you know why an island'd be impossible in real life, I find it odd you couldn't just make one that avoids those pitfalls.

Yeah, but those islands have other errors in them. Perfectionism isn't logical.

Just copy an existing island?

Or go 'Fuck it. Of course it's impossible - it's not real.'

Rule of cool/unrealism/fantasy/whatever has to beat reality occasionally in conworlding, if not frequently.
I now have a blog. Witness the horror.

I think I think, therefore I think I am.

I finally managed to convince myself that my latest island design was good enough. Or well, i haven't. I just started to design the culture and language of the people living there, and as both of them are linked to their enviroment (eg. names for animals and plants) i can't change the island itself after i've written enough about it. :D

You could make it be just an island without design for now, or something. Then you can say the capital is in the south and there is a major bay in the east, for example.

Alternatively, if they are a more primitive people, you could make the map like an old map, with exaggerations and errors:
