Lingua Latina

Post by Jarhead » Mon 24 Jan 2011, 15:31

Mihi linguam latinam exercenda est. Esne aliquid volens mecum colloqui, vel corrigere grammaticam meam?

I have to exercise latin. Is there anyone willing to speak with me, or to correct my grammar?

Certe. Cōnābor tecum loquī. Habēsne "Wheelock's Latin"?

Sure. I will try to speak with you. Do you have "Wheelock's Latin"?

Bonum. Piget mihi "Wheelock's Latin" agnoscere. Quid estne? Quo scio de lingua latina totum in schola didici.

Good. I'm sorry I don't know "Wheelock's Latin". What's that? I learnt all what I know about latin at school.
(Also, thanks for replying :P Do you know if my sentence "quid estne" is correct? I'm very unsure about that.)

Pardon if I crocodile (speak in another language instead of the proper one) here for a bit, but I've only started learning Latin myself... I believe that "quid est?" is correct, afaik. Wheelock's Latin is considered one of the finest Latin textbooks one can buy, and it is not at all expensive. I was asking because that is a common textbook that is recommended.

Also: "piget mihi"? Maybe "dolet mihi"... But I'm not sure. Piget mihi "it disgusts me", vs dolet mihi "it pains me"... dolet was given in my dictionary for "sorry".

I learned "Quid est hoc?" but that was in the context of asking about an actual physical object, so I don't know if it applies.

Physical as in visible?

I am not sure... so I should be studying my Wheelock's a bit more...

As in, pointing at something lying on a table and asking, "Quid est hoc?"

Yes, I think that would be correct in that case... but "what is it", is probably "quid est?"

I think that "quid est hoc" fits better the translation of "what is this" since hic, haec, hoc should be the demostrative pronoun. I also like you translation for "sorry" way better than mine.

Puto "quid est hoc" aptior esse interpretationi de "what is this" propter hic, haec, hoc sit prenomes ad demostratio.
(i totally made up the last three words :P )
Atque placet mihi tuam interpretationem de "sorry" magis quam mea.

Salvete omnes et maxime sankon qui est quam me patens latini in schola discendi causa. Quae schola ines, Sankon?

(woah I can't believe I wrote such a long sentence in latin. Let's hope it's right :P )

EDIT (since I'm in a good mood I'll write some moar)

Iam in Latinam I maneo. Tardissima est.

Melior quam me esse videris, spero res a te discere meliorque esse.

Spero mea verba bona esse intellegereque me...
