Word generator- Awkwords

Post by Heylola2 » Sat 31 Mar 2012, 18:32

As I'm sure many people here know, Awkwords has been taken down several months ago. I remember loving that site, so I got a little help and found the code! I have this download link, (below), and it contains everything you need to upload a working version of it to your own website. You can edit the code any way you wish.
I hope people find this of use!

http://www.4shared.com/zip/jl10iiVU/Awkwords_-11.html
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Byp1X2 ... aE16a0NaQQ
http://www.filedropper.com/awkwords-11

Feel free to contact me if the download links don't work. If you wish, I could email you the files. If that is so, you MUST include the name 'Awkwords' in the title.

That's great news! Is this the newer version of Awkwords that was taken down, or the old version?

Also, it's telling me I need to make a 4shared account to download it. I'd rather not, if you can be bothered to fix that.

For me, Zompist's Gen is the best alternative.

It has far more customize options, perfectly supports Unicode and supports rewrites.
Also, it is in Js (not in PHP), so it works faster, also offline, and you can get the source anytime.

Also also, for these you, who are zompist-alergic, I've just uploaded the site on a free hosting.

The weighting rules are probably the most inflexible rules ever conceived. The UI in general is also filled with programmer-itis. Not that Awkwords doesn't have programmer-itis but to a much lesser extent.

Sweet, thanks!

There's always one thing that's annoyed me about Awkwords.

Okay, so I'm running Qeungwo through it for kicks. However, I have a problem. Qeungwo only allows two types of consonant clusters: /n/ + <dental stop/fricative> and C+/j w/. However, /j/ cannot appear after four specific consonants in the lang. How the hell am I supposed to write the so that it doesn't let /j/ appear after those four consonants?

This is what I have right now:

V: a/e/i/u/o/eu/aw

G: w/y

T: p/t/k/b/d/g/f/s/c/j/cy/jy/x/h/n/m/ng/l/w/y/q/ch

S: m/n/ng/r/l

Syllable structure (I ignored the <nt ns nd> clusters because fuck trying to get that to work, I have no fucking clue how I would):(C)(G)V(S)

S: m/n/ng/r/l

Syllable structure (I ignored the <nt ns nd> clusters because fuck trying to get that to work, I have no fucking clue how I would):(C)(G)V(S)

Easy: [(C)(G)]^cy^jy^cyy^jyyV(S)

This won't work with your current orthography, however, as it'll confuse the single <cy> consonant for c+y clusters and flag it as illegal. But it can be done with a more complex solution.

V: a/e/i/u/o/eu/aw
T: [p/(n)t/k/b/(n)d/g/f/(n)s/x/h/n/m/ng/l/w/y/q/ch](w/y)*5/[c/j/cy/jy](w)
S: m/n/ng/r/l
(T)V(S)

This is assuming that clusters like ndw and nsy are allowed.

<n(d/s/t)w/y> clusters aren't allowed, that's the problem.

Then only one change needs to be made:

T:[p/t/k/b/d/g/f/s/x/h/n/m/ng/l/w/y/q/ch](w/y)*6/[c/j/cy/jy](w)/[nd/nt/ns]

Yeah, I wish the document explaining the logic was still around, because these word generators can get very confusing when you do complicated shit.

But thanks anyway.

You mean this document?

Anyway it's all very simple, once you understand that the power of Awkwords comes from how it's fully recursive.

Good resources to know! Since my other langs, Kuticwane especially, have simpler syllable structures, I'll definitely be using Awkwords. (Zompist's gen didn't work well at all; it only chose /i/ for a vowel.) Sadly, though, Hra'anh has too many phonotactical rules, and I'll gave to write my own generator.

I added two new links, so hopefully they'll work.
I love Awkwords because I can use the rules of my conlangs and get words that would work (no, they don't always work, but it's just for ideas, it doesn't assign translations or anything.) and, for me, inspiration for other words. It's also neat to see how many words are possible, with the constraints you have and everything.

It's the newest one, as far as I'm aware.
I put up two new links, and if you want, I could email it to you instead.

Thanks for uploading it! I have it uploaded on my own server, but I don't want more than a few people having that link. I would hate having to take it down because there was too much traffic.
