Alas, negative! I shall still be at the LSA at that time, and Alberta is a wee bit beyond practical weekend driving distance from Kentucky.

Absolutely cannot afford it at this juncture.
But the following lectures interest me:

Jeffrey Brown Auxiliary Languages in the Bahá’í Faith

Christine Schreyer, Someone from That Planet Might Be in the Audience

Sheldon Ebbeler, MA, Hyperluxian: A language based on Numbers & Knots - A Quipu :con: ? 'bout time!

Kevin Keith, Medieval Conlanging: What the Scholastics Can Teach Us About Constructing
Languages

And everything else, of course! [;)]

I also won't be there. Hope they'll have a nice live stream [:)]

Can’t come, for one because it’s a bit far away, and secondly because I’m already on vacation with other conlangers (from our discord server) at that time!

Will love to hear more about
Julia Hirschberg, Prosodic Entrainment Across Cultures

Robin Queen, When a Linguist Talks to a Dog

Lenore Grenoble, The subtlety of fieldwork: Answering the questions you are not asking
Spoiler: show
In this talk I discuss some strategies for mitigating some of these potential biases, and for documenting and analyzing a language on its own terms. I argue for an engaged model of fieldwork that involves, indeed requires, the active participation of language users, thoughtful attention of the linguist, and a broader view of what language is. This is a problem that Ken Hale also grappled with, and I draw on concrete examples from his own work (Hale 1992, 1998) and my own. As an illustrative case, Hale presents Damin, an auxiliary language used by Lardil men on Mornington Island in North Queen. Unlike Lardil, the Damin sound inventory (surprisingly) includes clicks. The use of an auxiliary system, with an auxiliary sound system, is unexpected and could be easily missed.

The meaningful use of phonemes among Damin speakers that aren't a part of the Damin auxlang sound system? The normal tendancy of a contact-lang/jargon is to reduce/economize the sound inventory. I think of Chinook Jargon /r/ lenition/lambdaization and Russenorsk sound inventory reduction. Cray-cray! What's up with that ?!

Sounds very interesting!

I can guess from context that the LCC is some kind of linguistics convention thingy? Does anyone have a link to information about it? I'm curious. :)

^ Neat [:D] I'll definitely try and go to that some year. Man, the first couple were in Berkeley, that would've been convenient to get to had I not been 5 years old at the time [:P] I literally don't know a soul in real life interested in conlanging, so to meet others like that in person sounds excellent.

This is the first I've heard about it, although I probably could have guessed there'd be one again this year. Like many others, even if I had known about it in advance and it were being held closer to me, I don't know if I'd have been able to afford going. I don't know what I'd do there, anyway, if the presentations are going to be put online again.

I would really love to meet some conlangers IRL and have a discussion. It's really qualitatively different.

Well, first of all, it’s completely different to actually seing the presentation irl. I’ve tried watching the older LCCs (I was at 6) and just couldn’t. Bad quality recordings, completely uninteractive etc. Sitting in the audience and getting to ask questions is just much nicer (yes, I know they took questions from IRC too last time, but I still don’t think it’s the same thing).

But secondly, what you miss is the in-between of talks. We went out for dinner afterwards, which turned out to be a bit of a failure as we didn’t reserve a restaurant, so we kept on splitting the groups. In the end, I ended up just going to a supermarket with three other conlangers I had never met before and hanging out in one of our hotel rooms. Twas a lot of fun chatting with them. Next morning, I discussed fontmaking with DJP, which now gives me the right to brag to non-conlangers about “btw I’ve eaten breakfast with the guy who made the languages for GoT”. Which is basically a given if you go to LCC, but of course people aren’t aware of that detail. Just generally the social aspect of it is great, and the talks are enjoyable and interesting.

Maybe we can get it to Europe again some time.

I emailed the LCC offering to help organise it and host it in Cambridge (university) as we have many spaces appropriate for conferences. Alas, they never replied to me. I would offer again, but I'll have left before the next conference is organised (unless they're keen to have 2 this year). Maybe I can get Frislander to take the reigns if he's there next year.

I reckon they’d favour continental europe over the UK since the last european one was there already. But as long as it’s within reach I’d be happy to go (which cambridge definitely is).

Argh! I mean yeah, that would be nice (I myself would love to attend the LCC someday), I am not yet a member of the LCS, and if I get in (which I should do tbh) I'll only be there as a first-year undergrad, so I'm not sure I'll be able to pull many strings in that regard.

What position do you hold there, @holbuzvala?

I'm just an undergrad, but I really doubt it would be beyond the powers of an individual student to organise a space to haot the LCC on their own.

On another note, what's the 'discord server'?

It’s a chatroom, comparable to IRC or Skype, but with all that fancy modern technology like different channels, roles you can give to people to allow them to see hidden channels/give them administrative power etc… works nicely in browser or as a standalone program and there are no costs associated with it like there are with, say, teamspeak.

Alas, as most of the moderation team is meeting up we’re currently not ready to post a public invite link somewhere. However, if you are interested in joining shoot me a PM here or go through our “official” invite place at https://www.reddit.com/message/compose? ... Fcdninvite and tell us you’re from here and we’ll add you in after our vacation (end of month).
