What kind of conlanger are you?

What can I say? It doesn't fit above, put it here. Also the location of board rules/info.

I enjoy being a scrapper, but I guess I'll be monogamous one day.

Khemehekis wrote:Loyalists have one conlang, and probably have only ever made one conlang. They've worked on it for years on end, possibly 10 or 15 years. Maybe they started this language in their adolescence and are in their fifties now. The language becomes elaborate, with a large vocabulary and 100-page grammar, and is as finely polished as a crystal skull with the intricacies, quirks and exceptions to rules that have been given time to develop. As a result of sticking with this one conlang, they usually produce a masterpiece that wins the acclaim of other conlangers, and sometimes even non-conlangers.

Scrappers are the serial monogamists of the conlanging world. They'll get a seed of a conlang in their head, develop a preliminary phonology, toy with the aspects of grammar that interest them, create a few words, (possibly) dabble in giving it a conculture, decide they don't like it, scrap it, and start a new one. Lather, rinse, repeat. One of their conlangs may have only 33 words of vocabulary as of the time it gets dumped, and their vocabularies will certainly never reach the size of Itlani or Talossan. Often they do not have enough grammar to say "The girl ran smoothly past the gate", or possibly even to say "I love you" as of the time they are scrapped. Scrappers might create 50 or even 200 conlangs in their lifetimes, but will never produce anything approaching what a loyalist would create in its scale and depth. They learn a little something from the experience of each conlang they create.

Fillers take a conworld and fill it up with peoples who each speak their own language. This can be a country, a planet, a solar system or even a whole galaxy. If scrappers are the serial monogamists and loyalists are the faithful lovers of conlanging, fillers are the polyamorists. They have many conlangs, often forming phyla like Indo-European, Afro-Asiatic or Austronesian, with diversity in phonology, syntax and morphology across the different families and phyla. Since each language has a well-defined role -- being the official tongue of a people in their conworld -- fillers keep all their languages. Some can be more developed than others, even though a filler may create a Swadesh-type list for all of his or her languages, but even the less developed ones will never be deprecated. The final goal of fillers is to finish a world replete with peoples and languages.

What type are you?
I fear that, as a relative newbie, I'm somewhere across all three :)

I'm the kind of person who knows that just translating English into a conlag is essentially presenting a very nicely done, but useless, cipher. My head is full of little rules and regulations about how specific sounds are made and the like, only none of those rules have made it onto paper. Translations I do provide are bound to be invented on the hoof and then slotted away in my short term memory.

"Enthusiast" is perhaps the accurate word!
My language can/will/might get better.....

So far, I seem to be a loyalist. I've been working on my first conlang for a couple of years now. I've got the rudiments of a grammar and just over 2900 words for Rireinutire. Also, I'm working on the conworld (well, solar system) that goes with the language.

Hardcore loyalist. Although I've scrapped most of my original plans for my language. I consider the current work to be the same language because the idea behind it is the same.

I'm probably still very much of a scrapper, but there seems to be a recent trend towards filler-ness among my latest group of (yet unscrapped) conlangs.

I am most definitely a Scrapper!

(Hopefully someone gets this!)

But, I have recently created a con-world for the first time, and attempted to assign a number of languages to fill roles similar to the broad language groups of Earth. However, since I can't stay focused on them for too long, I usually get as far as an inventory, a conscript, and a few building block words and move one. I think I've mentioned here before, but the script-making process is really the part I like the absolute most... so once that is nailed down, I guess I don't feel like I need to do much more. And, like a true perfectionist, I am constantly revising the scripts to change one little thing or another. Lately, I have been obsessed with a Korean-like script that is tentatively referred to as Śi Ti Ban Tu /ʃi ti pʰɑ̃ŋ tɯ/.

Scrapper turned loyalist. The whole time I was trying to create the perfect language (of coursel, perfect in my opinion).
First, I learned English.
Dann lernte ich Deutsch.
Y ahora aprendo Español.

I am now working on one, which I will try to make PERFECT. Hopefully, this will lead me down the path of loyalty.

I'm very much a scrapper. Typically what causes me to scrap a conlang is realizing that something really fundamental about the language needs changing. And it's faster in the end to just open up a new document and start again (perhaps with some new ideas I've picked up) than to go through all the work I've done already, changing it and making sure it's consistent.

I never did play it, despite buying the CD; I was new to the internet at the time and didn't realize you had to pay a subscription fee. [:$] I spent quite a while perusing the lists of origins, archetypes and powers, though.

I made a badass looking character, then never used it; the game was unfortunately rather repetitive.

I would call myself a filler, although all the other languages beyond Nothern and Southern Vúase(Vusa Um and Vinsum respectively) are mostly just ideas.

It was... but if you could get into it with a bit of roleplay, or finding a fun group of people, it was endless supplies of fun... at least I thought so.

Before the game closed down, I was still working on my goal of getting one of each Archetype to max level (50).

Inveterate scrapper. But not because I dislike my work - merely because other things distract me and I forget about my language, then inspiration strikes and I'm off on a new language.

I'm relatively new to conlanging, having only really thought about doing it in the past few months, however it seems to me that I'm becoming a filler.

I already have three main proto-languages in mind for my conworld:
Proto-Oenj (/œŋ/) - a highly vocalic and isolating tonal language father to a number of languages spoken by a race of pseudo-monkeys called the Oenj (literally meaning "the walkers")
Proto Lang 2 - a fusional language spoken by a race of lizardmen
Proto Lang 3 - a highly synthetic non-vocalic language spoken by a race of giant hive insects

Probably scrapper. The languages I worked on previously were scrapped due to being unnaturalistic and noobish or due to being little more than sketches. I've been conlanging for little more than a year I think, so that doesn't reveal much about long-term trends.

I'm a cross between a loyalist and a scrapper, if that makes any sense. I've been working on just the one conlang for over a year now, deviating only to cobble together a few random phonemic inventories that never led to anything greater, but it's just a massive linguistic Trigger's broom in that I've added, removed and re-introduced so many components that it barely resembles even the way it looked back when I turned up at this forum.

Let's just say I'm a horribly indecisive loyalist.

I have been working on solely one conlang ever since I started so loyalist I guess. Though the very first version of my conlang has little in common with the current one.
