What can I say? It doesn't fit above, put it here. Also the location of board rules/info.

How is your nick pronounced?

Post by kadani » Mon 16 Aug 2010, 19:53

I really dislike if my mental voice makes odd makeshift pronunciations for some nicknames and after I realized that poor sangi39 was mangled to /"zAn.gi noin.Und.dRai.sIk/ (or similar, I suck at transcribing German into X-SAMPA) by my inner voice, I thought that I better ask how y'all are pronounced.

I am /ka:."da:.ni:/ 8-)
Q: Il'isa sike'han suntes?
A: Xe'isa sike'han Sike'tes... kali.

In contrast to popular perception, I do have a life. I just choose to spend it conlanging.

I pronounce mine at least two different ways. The first is [sæŋi:] and the second one is [sæŋgi:], annoyingly I don't know where the stress is though :p It's the name of my first conlang and also means "tongue" and "language" :)

My name consists simply of the first letter of my first name (Christian) and my surname (Munk), so it would be pronounced

[si:.mVNk]

by a speaker of english. But I would pronounce it

[se_?\.mONk]

in danish. And if you speak german

[tse:.muNk]

I'm happy whatever you say, but don't try and pronounce the first two consonants as a cluster like [kmuNk] or [tSmVNk]

It's pronounced /ʤiks/.
Sorry, it's a terrible joke.

/ɔsɪkʰoʊn/ I guess. In case you were wondering, these are ossicones:

I've totally been reading sangi as /sɑɲi/

And I thought CMunk was just from a love of chipmunks.

EDIT: Added picture.

[mɪstɚ kɻʷəʊv] usually. [mɪstɚ krʷəʊv] when I'm feeling extra pompous.

Simply [slɪv], I guess. I might pronounce it [slɪf] most of the time, as in Dutch a final -v is really odd, and the difference between /v/ and /f/ is often omitted.

I'm more concerned about how people write it, though. It's an acronyme: S. L. in 't Veld > SLiV. Please, not Sliv or (even worse) SliV.

Hum ...

Antiphlogistine, in French it's pronounced /ɑ̃.ti.flɔ.ʒis.tin/ (wiktionary). In English, it is known as RUB A535 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RUB_A535 ).

It is indeed a weird name ... I'm someone who likes absurd humour ... And Antiphlogistine is a part of an absurd story I'm writing ... I've adapted the The Beatles song The Yellow Submarine to Nous adorons tous l'Antiphlogistine (Everybody likes Antiphlogistine). I'm still looking for a "karaoke" version of that song without any voices to record it ...

Meaning "extraordinary" or "special" if my bried search through the interwebses went ok :)

To me this sounds kind of like a word spoken by the GELF of Red Dwarf :p

Khemehekis = /xɛməˈhɛkɨs/

And this is how I imagined the other names being pronounced:
Kadani /kɑˈdɑni/
Sano /ˈsɑnou/
Sangi39 /sɑŋgiθɝtiˈnain/
LetoAtreides /ˈlitou əˈtɹiɨdiz/
CMunk /ˈsimʌŋk/ (thought it was short for chipmunk too)
Ossicone /ˈɑsɨkoun/
MrKrov /mɪstɚˈkɹɑv/
SLiV /slɪv/
Antiphlogistine /æntaiflouˈdʒɪstin/
Yiuel /jiuˈɛl/
Hakaku /haˈkaku/
Sankon /sɑnˈkoun/

/ævdʒənzə/; definitely not /avjunza/. /avʒənza/ or /avʒənzə/ if you like, since that's how its pronounced in my main conlangs.

Mine should be pronounced /I"leI.r\u/, but I usually just say /@"leI.r\u/. Pretty straightforward, the <i> is just silent.

Although my current conpeople would probably pronounce it more /i"leI.4u/ or /i"leI.4I.ju/.

I actually don't pronounce the "39" bit of my user name, that's just there, essentially, because I like 3 and 3*3 :p
