The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

What can I say? It doesn't fit above, put it here. Also the location of board rules/info.

I think this is my new favorite expression:

all my eye and Betty Martin

Its obscure origin makes it even more interesting, though some of the purported etymologies of this phrase are all my eye and Betty Martin themselves. [;)]

Am I wrong?

In the last few days I have listened to 2NE1’s Japanese version of their “I Am the Best”.
It seems to have a lot more English than their Korean version.
I look looked at the lyrics and got the same impression.

I know neither Korean nor Japanese; so I’m asking, am I right or am I wrong?

Just had a quick check, and yeah, there's two full verses of the Japanese version that are sung in English which are sung in Korean instead in the Korean version.
You can tell the same lie a thousand times,
But it never gets any more true,
So close your eyes once more and once more believe
That they all still believe in you.
Just one time.

That's a mighty funny one!
Though, sorry for the nitpick, the sailor might've read the prayer somewhere, since no Italian I don't think would ever have pronounced /mihi/ as [maj.ʔaj] but rather ['mi:.ʔi]

I'm having a fun time reading A Tale of Two Cities, and to entertain myself, I imagine all of the characters speaking the :yout: most backwoods British accent (Emily Blunt and Cecily Strong in SNL GBBO)

Ironic you consider these accents as "backwoods" when they're using (very approximate tbf) accents from Leeds-Bradford and Merseyside respectively, among the largest regions of urbanisation in the UK.

I'm not sure that there isn't a link between the increasing legal pressure on #45 and his associates, and the dramatic shift in tone regarding NK and China. What seems to be happening; each time R. Mueller gets a little closer, #45 goes out of his way to make a hyperbolic and horrific statement (via Twitter, usually) so as to draw attention away, or undermine the ongoing investigation.

Before I became a father, I really enjoyed being an uncle, and godfather, and a teacher.
I expect you’ll enjoy being an aunt!
Congratulations to you, and your sister, and your brother-in-law!

Spent the day in York with my mum ahead of her birthday tomorrow. Completely forgot it was York Pride today too until I saw someone with rainbows painted on each cheek. One year, I'll turn up properly [:P]

So.

Elder Scrolls VI.

I thought I was jaded and done with Bethesda but apparently it takes exactly sixteen seconds of a new Elder Scrolls theme for me to get excited all over again. I don't know why I bother, I'm just going to be disappointed...

(but you guys! YOU GUYS!!! MORE ELDER SCROLLS. will it be the summerset isles? hammerfell? high rock??? throw everybody for a loop and set it in yokuda???? okay so that one's pretty unlikely but I'm still pretty excited to see what lore they can butcher and tame down this time!! And the theme has a dramatically different aesthetic than Skyrim's which I find promising!)

This article might be of interest to some here. It's about loss of native language through the lifespan with special attention to early trauma. (Real, serious trauma. Though it would be interesting to learn if the lesser traumas we all experience have similar effect or not.)

On May 16 this year

My step-daughter had a baby girl, and,
as long at the détènte accords hold,
that makes me a abuelastro.
Frankly, I'd rather be an abuelo astral.
That may well come with time. [B)]

Felicitations all around!
