Well, I bought a $1,200 gaming computer. Better be worth it.

I read this as "$1,200 computer game" at first and was like "what the hell kind of game costs that much?! [O.O]"
You can tell the same lie a thousand times,
But it never gets any more true,
So close your eyes once more and once more believe
That they all still believe in you.
Just one time.

Even if you don't end up playing that many games on it, it so is.

Indeed. I'm looking for a decent monitor for it at the moment, hopefully it is fine.

So, what's special about a $1200 gaming computer?
Generally, a PC intended to be good at gaming specifically will have a beefy GPU (or several SLIed), a fast ethernet connection and possibly an SSD. Otherwise, it's no different really from other higher spec PCs: more RAM, more processing speed (be that from more cores, overclocking or just higher speed cores), more HDD space and plenty of peripheral connection points. All that then generates a fair amount of heart, so liquid cooling systems start appearing at this level, though some opt for giant fans or submerging the whole system in an oil bath. Of course, this all needs powered, so a bigger supply unit gets added (which also generates heat that needs dumped). Finally, you're spending a lot on this rig, so expect some purely cosmetic nonsense, usually in the form of LEDs, because glowing shit is cool.

Oh, Laird Jeebus.

Begone,
Alienware!!! :mrred:

My son recently is having an issue with his Alienware $1200 thinking-machine.
It is making funny goatish bleatings, refuses to recognize it's HD,
doesn't feel like booting up, and the pretty LED lights are either shining red or not shining.

I think he bumped it on its head (which happened to me & a Dell laptop) and I accidentally loosened the connecting cable/ribbon.

I opened the ALienware up, but the cables looked secure. [:S]
Quite possibly the HD is done [:(]
And his 'puter is giving up the cybertronic ghost.

G'bye Ark:Survival, Spore, G-Mod, Subnautica, Left for Dead, etc., until he finishes landing a job.

Hello Gormiti Pachisi, Pokémon Chaturranga, Trash-Packs Bishop's Caundle, AD&D Monopoly, and assorted card games we kitbashed from years before.

On reflection, computers can be evil, mind-sucking things. :wat:

This thing looks like B-Mo from Adventure Time coalesced with Doctor Theopolis from Buck Rogers in the 24th century.

I fear it. [O.o]

Now thát is just . . . wow.

Things really haven't changed all that much, I guess. Ages ago, this was the game machine:
Spoiler:

It had everything Ànradh's machine has. Not really so different, the new machines, they're just, you know, more.

Yeah, it's just mostly a case of bigger numbers these days.
My tower has plenty of room to upgrade still, because I'm neither a lottery winner nor insane enough to buy a top spec machine for casual gaming.
When I built mine, I was offered a triple GTX-980 SLI... enough resolution that I'd need three 4K monitors just to make use of it. Suffice it to say I declined, as I'm not sure where I'd put the things even were I to acquire them!

Lambuzhao, if the machine's a pricey one, it might be worth bringing a pro tech out to have a look at it. Cheap one's can be tinkered with without much fear, but I'd not risk dabbling with the arcane mechanisms of anything costing more than ~£500.

I bought one of the better Dell Inspirion's. I'm not really into the tacky looking towers with glowing parts, anyway, but I still get all the power of one with half the price. With it, I bought a 1440p 165hz gsync dell monitor for $350. Not a bad steal.

Very much what I was thinking. The shame is, a really really savvy Computer Teacher was just transferred from our school to the other side of
Brethrensloveby. Plus it's Summer vacation time, and she usually visits family in the Carolinas.

I have been lining up some potential shops (bigger ones, and a couple more reputable mom-pop stores) to take a look. :wat:

I have also been making ready with the positronic equivalents of Extreme Unction oils and prayers. [B)] [:'(]

Thanks for the torch lighting me in the right direction!
