The Quintessential 5th Conversation Thread

Since shimobaatar reminds us that the previous Thread had reached the venerable page count of 420, I wonder if perhaps a new Thread might not be in order. I don't know what, if any, precedents there are for making a new Thread, but I'll give it a go . .. .

Saw this recently, which I think is rather exciting given our interest in all things letrical:

One of the very first pieces of paper ever to be printed upon in England. The first thing I noticed, especially as compared to many other printed books from later ages, was how clean and neat Caxton's letters are, how straight the lines and how striking the text on paper looks. Truly a work of art as well as craftsmanship!

Good heavens! Time to regenerate already?
But... I don't want to.

Well, as long as it's quintessential, we must go onward and upward.

エレムティラスさん 、おかえりなさいませ!
Welcome back, Eremutirasu-san!

[:D]

That's the worst! Last month I told a friend of mine to turn around "in the circle thing at the end of street" and she just looked at me and said "you mean the cul-de-sac?"
Sheißcookies! Cul-de-sac: that's what it's called! [:$] [¬.¬] [B)]

Goodness, that is marvelous!

Anyone here speak medieval Latin and want to translate? (Apparently the pages are about organizing religious feast-days.) [:D]

I can pick out a bunch of names : Deus, Jo(han)ne, s(an)cte trinitatis, Bernabe, Petronilla.
The challenge is, remembering what all the abbreviations mean.
The macra over various letter could mean than only one letter was abbreviated
E.g.
feſtū -> festum
(Leaf I, line v)

or a few letters

hiſtō Deus oīm -> historia Deus omnium
(Leaf I, line vi)

I did the next best thing to translating. I found a transcription of the pages, with the abbreviations
unabbreviated. Whew. Thank you, Internet!

https://uorcaxtondisplay.wordpress.com/ ... scription/

Interesting to see so much /t/→/c/ and it not be :esp: : comemoracionibus, comemoracio, etc.

I could certainly share this with some other latinists on CBB for a kind of translation relay, where we each take 2-3 lines.

There may be an :eng: translation already out there, though. [:S]

I think this thread will only take off if a mod is notified and asked to lock the other thread.

Ossicone used to dutifully change the conversation threads whenever one reached around 300 pages.
Edit: Oh, and it should be spelt "Quintesseintial" [;)]

Which reminds me, has anyone been keeping tabs on Ossicone recently? Her website, while still up, appears to be completely lacking in conlang information (and I tried it on both Firefox and Chrome so it isn't a browser issue), and I know she admitted on Conlangery a while back that she'd lost interest and hasn't been much active in the conlang community since.

Wow! That took way to long to get! :mrred:

Hope all is well with her!

Perhaps someone should take on her other duties? I've noticed no changes or additions to ranks or anything since Micamo was made MVP; and there had been no changes for a very long while before that time...

It looks like her whole website has been reverted. There used to be comics.

Oh, wow, looks like the other thread was locked without any debate at all, at least not for us proles to participate in. [:P] I'm so used to the other one (I think I joined while the 3rd was still going, but I wasn't aware of the existence of this kind of thread until much later after the 4th had been going for a while) that I'm a little sad to see it go, but there are much more important things to worry about in life.

I also hope Ossicone is alright, even if she's moved on from conlanging.

According to the Forum News Thread, gach and clawgrip have been made MVPs, and sangi39 and Dormouse559 have been made Mods since Micamo was made an MVP. The two new Mods have been doing great, in my opinion.

I received my new fountain pen and a book half an hour ago.
The nib is indeed finer than the one of the pen I used before, and the whole pen is much lighter.

Just noticed that Papuan Indonesian has grammaticalized the word for 'head' into a habitual. I guess it's restricted to animate subjects though.

Lakilaki ini kepala berantem.
man DEM head argue
This man likes to argue/often argues. (lit. this man is a head of arguing.)

They go by Click and boehijt here; typo "no"

Nope this discussion is too uncomfortable. Rather we'd delete it.

Got it. I've deleted my quotation of the original post as well.

Sorry, no. I was actually talking to qwed but I quoted your message as well by accident, shimobaatar.

Sorry about the confusion. [xP]
