Will they all have to be re-labeled in order to be sold legally in the U.S.?
Given the precedents for food names in the USA, I look forward to seeing "goat mylc" or "goat milk-product" on grocery store shelves soon!

Then there's stuff like coconut milk as well.

On something completely unrelated to milk, my life's done a bit of a U-turn, then a twirl, then erratically ran around a bit.

<rant>

So I moved 6th forms after Y12 because while the teaching at the first place was absolutely phenomenal, trying to fit 2000 kids on a campus that could support maybe 1000 tops didn't make for the most enjoyable experience. The place I spent Y13 in was much smaller (about 250 kids) and was much more peaceful, but the teaching wasn't great, and I had the joys of the worst teacher I've ever had the misfortune to encounter. I had to restart my CS A Level because the 2 places were on different exam boards, then they made me take up a 4th A Level (Music Tech) because I was doing Further Maths. All pretty hectic. So, at the end of this year I have: 2 A Levels. One in Maths, another in Further Maths. I liked this second place just as little as the first by the end of the year and basically gave up on it. my plan was to take a gap year, then see if I can get into a University.

This left me with a kind of path that wasn't very certain and was probably not going to be terrific (it's very hard to get into 90% of unis with 2 A Levels). This is where shit starts getting a bit nuts. The 2nd place had all the Y12 students (I was grouped in with them rather than the Y13s as I would have be doing a Y14 had I not bailed out at the end of this year) find some form of work experience for the end of the year, and we'd already got me some through a friend. I was still signed up for that, so last week I spent 5 days at this software dev company in Bristol. It was actually really fun and the work environment they had there was great and I got plenty done.

On the Friday evening, I got a call from the lead dev and I got offered a job interview in 2-3 weeks which I'm pretty optimistic about. I went from not really knowing what I was doing for anything to getting a job interview in a week. This was the point where I discovered how susceptible I am to Impostor Syndrome, and I'm still in a state of disbelief 3 days later. Needless to say I'm over the fucking moon about this, but I'm trying my best not to come across as overly modest. I'm just as surprised as the next guy.

I thought it would be possible to get a B.Sc in Anthropology at my uni, but it looks like I'd need Advanced Functions 12U to switch to that program.
I don't know if a B.A would still let me do fieldwork science or if it's more for like teaching and shit.

I think that, first of all, they should drop the word “bovine”, and just admit that all mammal mothers lactate:

And, second of all, allow any term that’s been in common use for 45 years or longer, to be “grandfathered in”,
perhaps with a requirement that the label bear a parenthetical “contains no actual milk”.

That would permit milk of magnesia and coconut milk, and probably soy milk;
while perhaps prohibiting almond milk and rice milk.
(I’ve done no actual research.)
I think it would also still permit the film about Harvey Milk to be entitled “Milk”.

Truthfully I wonder whether anyone attempting to enforce this absurd regulation might not be risking getting tarred and feathered;
at least that’s what would have happened to an Englishman trying to enforce it in pre-Revolutionary colonial America.

Coconuts have hair and give milk. Therefore, they are mammals.

from my knowledge, a recent FDA or USDA decision was that Almond milk cannot be termed such anymore b/c almonds can't give milk. Of course, it was meant as a way to increase milk sales to prop up Midwestern farmers.

Wow.

This whole milk-schmeer makes me think that some audience members of an old Lewis Black concert or two, who might have been or are currently FDA employees, took his ideas on the subject a little too seriously -

Their intended target was almond milk and other nut milks, as well as soy milk and rice milk and other “milk” from non-animal sources.
But they used a tactical nuke instead of a MAC-10.
They said “bovine mammal” instead of just “mammal”; thus illegalizing goat milk, for instance.
And they completely forgot to consider such long-standing traditional terms such as “coconut milk” and “milk of magnesia”.

It’s a small step to illegalizing “peanut butter” and “apple butter”.

I don’t mean to appear facetious (much less to actually be facetious), but that’s quite an accomplishment!
How did you manage that?

And is it painful or exhausting or just more difficult now, to use a keyboard to participate on this board?

Get well soon!

They should change it from "bovine mammals" to "bovid mammals". That'd get the goats and sheep in.

Thanks everyone! Nothing special happened, I started running downhill and when I tried to slow down I fell in what seems to be the most unlucky way [:D]

I use my phone and luckily I can move my fingers so I type with one finger albeit very slowly. It takes some tome and a lot of effort to hit the right buttons. I already logged out twice by accident.The current heatwave makes it especially hard.

Go for it!

Just start up a new thread about a world or language or culture. Try every day or every week to add a post: tell a story, talk a little about some aspect of a language, post a picture of a script, describe some interesting tidbit of culture. Discuss any questions that come along. That's really all there is to making a thread.
