Are you a conlanger or a conworlder first?

What can I say? It doesn't fit above, put it here. Also the location of board rules/info.

Definitely conworlder. Been doing it longer, been doing it better (read 'can actually do it well'.)

I created my first conworld when I was eight. I created my first conlang when I was over 30. 'Nuff said.

I get the sense that on the whole, the board is filled with conlang-first people, rather than conworld-first people. Though that's also based on the relative velocities in posts between the "Conlangs" forum and the "Conworlds" forum.

First and foremost I'm a conscripter. My passion has always been most for inventing written languages. Then, after that, I forge a language and lastly a world for the folks to live in. However, now that I have a world that's been consistent for a while, I am Keen to give it some more thought and do more with it.

Interestingly, it seems like more people who responded to this thread chose "conworlder" over "conlanger". I didn't expect that. :wat:

Neither did I.

I recall that awhile ago, we had a discussion on conlanging vs. conworlding, and someone said that she feels as if an aspect of a conworld needs to be developed perfectly for her to share it, whereas with a conlang, she can just talk about the blueprints of her conlang. Maybe others here are the same way.

I think there's an element to that, especially because cultural things feel like they need more meat, and are harder to change once said. Also, I think conlangs are easier to describe quickly and easily, because there's a pretty well-understood vocabulary for talking about languages (e.g. "my language has a case system! Here are the cases! Here are weird edge cases!"). Concultures, on the other hand, take more words to explain, especially since it generally requires getting into a completely new head space, as it were.

Consider, for instance, how one would describe the tenses of AAVE as opposed to describing the cultural role (amongst speakers of AAVE) of playing the Dozens.

So I guess it makes sense.

...I still wish more people contributed to the conpeople opinions thread [:'(]

I feel that I'm a conlanger first, and a conworlder 1.5th.

A little further away, but not that far. And nowhere close to right out.

I suspect the reason many of us consider ourselves to be conworlders first is because we conlang as part of our conworlding; that this board focuses on that one particular aspect of conworlding might tempt one to assume otherwise though, because -- of course -- conworlding is far from the only reason people conlang.

There's also the fact that, as this board focuses on that one aspect, conlangs will thus receive an otherwise undue level of scrutiny here, so people might find that they seem to be better or more confident conworlders in comparison -- I have my doubts that my geology or meteorology knowledge is advanced as my linguistics knowledge, but were I to make a mistake on one of those topics on this forum, I could put winning bets on which mistake would be corrected first, most often and most throughly.
