Game: Let's Reform English Grammar

Post by Luan » Wed 07 Jan 2015, 21:32

Hey folks,
this thread is actually just a copy from the German forum. (viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3517)
The topic is, as the title says, a stepwise reformation of English grammar and phonology.

The rules: Below you'll find a sample text in normal English. Every post has to introduce at least one new grammar rule which doesn't even have to be natural and apply it to the text. That means: You can just be as creative or uncreative as you want...
The game ends when you can't classify the text's language as english any more.
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.

Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.

No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.
All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.

Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law.

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.

Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.

I thought this was about grammatical reform? I'm not trying to condemn you or anything, but I'm just trying to figure out what's allowed in the game.

Ah, OK. I didn't look at the German thread, and I assumed "creative/uncreative" was only meant in terms of grammar. I've personally never heard "grammar ≠ just morphosyntax" before.

Anyway, this is all good to know.

Well, it's basically a matter of 'how you define it' [:)] In the narrow sense, 'grammar' ≈ morphology and syntax, but depending on the context, it can include phonology and various other stuff. Depending of your theoretical framework, it can be useful to think of grammar as the rule-bound aspects of a language, as opposed to the lexicon, which has be memorised entry-by-entry.

Btw, Google now thinks the language is Igbo.

I skipped to the last post after I read the first one. I could only understand four words. [:'(]
I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.

How about we try a different genre this time?
There was once upon a time a poor widow who had an only son named Jack, and a cow named Milky-white. And all they had to live on was the milk the cow gave every morning which they carried to the market and sold. But one morning Milky-white gave no milk and they didn’t know what to do.

“What shall we do, what shall we do?” said the widow, wringing her hands.

“Cheer up, mother, I’ll go and get work somewhere,” said Jack.

“We’ve tried that before, and nobody would take you,” said his mother; “we must sell Milky-white and with the money do something, start shop, or something.”

“All right, mother,” says Jack; “it’s market-day today, and I’ll soon sell Milky-white, and then we’ll see what we can do.”
