Sabellan language (Warning: "rom"lang)

Post by Harkani » Fri 03 Feb 2017, 01:53

Sabellan (Or Sabellian, depending on which one you prefer) is a "rom"lang spoken in an alternate earth.
Spoiler:
For all men, whether he prays in Mosque, in Church, or in Synagogue.
May this place be a safe haven, a place of tolerance and respect.
May the squabbles of Kings not trouble us,
As we move forth into the new era of God.

Sabellan is a language originating in Northern Africa, in and around the City-State of Sabella. The vast majority of Sabellan speakers, however, live either in the Federation of America, in the state of San Jacinto

Origins
The Reason why this is called a "rom"lang is because Sabellan is not descended from Proto-Romance, but instead from Proto-Italic, specifically the Osco-Umbrian languages. While there is a significant substrate of Latin and Arabic, Sabellan should be considered an Itallang instead of a romlang.

Phonology

Code: Select all

/p	b	t	d	k	g	/
/ (ts)	(dz) /
/ (tʃ)	(dʒ) /
/f (β) v	(ð)	s	z	ʃ	ʒ	(ɣ)	h/
/m	n	ŋ /
/ɹ l	ʎ	w	j /
As most romance languages, /b d g/ undergo lenition to /β ð ɣ/ intervocalically.
In some dialects, /b/, /v/ and /w/ have merged into /β/ or /ʋ/.

Code: Select all

/a	e	i	o	u	ei	ai	oi	ou	au	ɑ̃	ĩ/
In some dialects, /au/, /ou/, and /o/ have merged into /ɔ/. A similar process occurred with /e/, /ei/, and /ai/ merging into /ɛ/
After palatals, /i/ and /e/ tend to merge into /ɨ/ or be deleted altogether.

Morphosemantics
This is a work in progress, still. Regardless, imagine that this language is Latin, except sometimes Arabic influence is seen. That's how it works.

So my thing is that I'll make some posts explaining more about this language, because a lot of it isn't written down/finalized. This way, you'll have a reason to check back and see how uninteresting Sabellian really is.

nice (:

Do you have sound changes from Vulgar Latin to Sabellan? (:

Also, maybe you can consider to introduce the world in detail in the Conworld forum of this site?

He did say that it was related to the Oscan-Umbrian (aka P-Italic) branch rather than Latino-Faliscan, so it couldn't be descended from Vulgar Latin.

This is very promising and I am excited.
I started my own first italic language based in a similar region and it has arabic as a substrate, although it is a child of vulgar latin. This branch of italic is oft neglected, I wish it brings you enjoyment.

Sabella Urba
The city of the three brothers.

Sabellan proper, also known as Urban Sabellian or Sabella Urbanhe, is the dialect spoken in the city-state of Sabella. The ASLL (Acadanja de lha Fancua Sabellanhe et Literadura) specifically defines the main area of Sabellan Proper dialects as the environs of the City-state to approximately 80-90 kilometers in any direction. This dialect is marked by its usage of several features from the nearby dialects of Arabic, as well as borrowing a multitude of words from both Hebrew and Greek.

Note that Sabellan Proper is not considered standard for the Sabellan language, and that most dialects can and will diverge quite thoroughly from Sabellan Proper.

Morphology:
Sabellan proper's pronouns are, in order from first to third and singlar to plural, are "jo", "du", "lha", "no", "vo", and "lho". The reason for this is that, outside of conservative, high-register speech, the main demonstratives/definitive articles are "lha" and "vo". In fast-paced speech common for peddlers or street toughs, this can be elided further into semi-vowels, and appended onto the word similar to a clitic.

In all honesty, Sabella Urba is just representative enough to be considered "standard" here, and as such has very little about it to say as compared to other dialects.

Example of speech:
Saluete, Me noman e Dalim, e me barjorba e lh'orba de Sabella. Jo in v'disritov dazuxi eram hecanz, e halio dovtex ga yadez.

Sorry it's taken me so long to post again. I have writer's block.
