Was this third gender an innovation, or has the neuter been preserved from Classical Latin?

Does the first /ə/ in the second word come from the same Latin vowel as the /e̯a/ in the first word?

Sorry, that was a mistake, it should be e̯a. But as a general statement, the vowel is the same between the two, and the vowel cannot become /ə/ <ă>
