Tip: French has multiple common sound changes that result in /i/'s like that.
Or should I just say it if this tip isn't helping?

Does it have to do with the influence of another vowel?

Well, I give up on trying to guess the origins of /oi̯/.

Is it a noun?

I just noticed that it's a Vulgar Latin word. It's a masculine second declension noun in Vulgar Latin, but in Latin it seems to have been female with an additional alternative second declension male form!

Interesting. In Classical Latin, was it a first declension noun?
