The source of the word is a compound of two Latin words, so, no and bonus clue.

It's a little hard to answer these kinds of questions correctly since several consonants were lost in the transit... So, I'll go with a "sort of".

Was the syllable in the original word that corresponds to the last syllable in the modern word exclusively part of the second morpheme in the original word?

To be clear: you're asking if /nu/ came 100% from the second syllable of the second ancestor word in Latin? Which means you're making sure it doesn't bridge any gaps in the second word?

No, it doesn't bridge any gaps, it's the first part of the second word and the last part of the first word that got all messy in the center of the modern word.

(For the future, I have a much easier word in mind as this one seems tougher than I intended.)

Is the final -u from -us/-um

Oh...
Is the final -u from any Latin declensional termination?

Well, it does come from *a* declension, just not one that ends in a "u."

So one syllable had to be lost? I guess it is the second syllable and therefore the second and third consonant (/t/ + /?/, probably /s/) merged together into /t͡s/?

Ummm... I think I just need to give some more clues here as opposed to a direct answer.

It was the third syllable of the original words that got deleted after some reductions, and the second syllable ended up becoming what is now the "center" of the word. As far as the ending goes, there was some regular (and somewhat un-naturalistic) vowel metathesis that occurred, which put the <i> where it is after it switched with the <u> that now resides at the end.

(Hopefully this helps people get on the right track.)

So the original two words were something like "tanCu(CVC)i..#" then?
