Quotes from the children (Zelda: Majora's Mask)

Post by Iyionaku » Wed 10 Jan 2018, 16:16

As there have not been many translation challenges in last time, I thought I'd revive the section a little. In the computer game Zelda: Majora's Mask, there are some pretty interesting quotes from some "children" in the end of the game that I thought would be nice as a challenge.

:eng: English

All: Heh heh... Thanks... You're nice. Umm... Can I ask... a question?

Odolwa: Your friends... What kind of... people are they? I wonder... Do those people... think of you... as a friend?

Goht: You... What makes you...happy? I wonder... What makes you happy... Does it make...others happy, too?

Gyorg: The right thing... What is it? I wonder... If you do the right thing... Does it really make... everybody...happy?

Twinmold: Your true face... What kind of... face is it? I wonder... The face under the mask... Is that... your true face?

Majora: Do you want to play with me? OK, let's play good guys against bad guys... I'll be the good guy, and you'll be the bad guy, and when you're the bad guy, you just run.

[Feel free to skip the ellipsis points if they bother you!]

:chn: Mandarin

By the way, you can omit the pauses if they irritate you and stop you from doing this challenge - I will do so myself because I indeed think they're infuriating.
Also, the transliterations of the names are from Wikipedia, but other than that this is my own attempt. Interestingly, the Chinese translation made a transliteration for Odolwa, Goht, Gyorg and Majora, but rather loan translated Twinmold as "double-mold".

N = "noble" or human-associated gender
C = "common" or non-guman associated gender
DISJ = disjunctive

At least 52.45 percent of the reason I haven't replaced <c> and <q> with <k> is that I get to have word-initial <cqu>, which Twinmold demonstrates when it says "cquella".

EDIT: I decided to not respell or otherwise change the proper names, but I naturalized the pronunciation. That's probably what will happen with most recent borrowings into Silvish. The French version of "Majora's Mask" changes some of the names (Goht > Rhork, Twinmold > Skorn), and with France's influence on Silvish culture, those name changes might also appear. For now, I decided to just stick to the English.

NOTES:
  • DC represents discourse particles, with a brief description following in parentheses.
  • i-málon (I give) is an informal way of thanking someone, a shortened form of the formal "i-malón-o-so su̯ánki", "I give you gratitude".
  • "E" is a word with many uses. It is a question marker, a hesitation marker, and a relativizer. Odolwa's second sentence demonstrates these three uses of the word. It is also used to express a hortative or cohortative, as seen in Majora's second sentence.
  • HORT is the hortative/cohortative marker.
