1½ (One and a Half)

Post by Lambuzhao » Wed 07 Mar 2018, 14:03

Trying to figure out an Old English equivalent to :lat: sesqui- [:S]

Found some interesting divagations. If your conlang has a special stand-alone word and/or combining infix for 'one-and-a-half', post it here. Be sure to mention any special usage notes (E.G. odd (relictual) declensional pattern, dedicated cases used with it, is it used to mean '1:30', etc).

:lat:

*semisque > sesqui
half=CNJ
half and (again)

:deu:

anderthalb
other.half
NB: Originally, the /andert/ morpheme meant 'second'. This would mean the word orginally meant something like 'a second half (again)' or somesuch.

:rus:

полтора́ (m,n) ; полторы́ (f)
[pol.to.ra'] [pol.to.rɨ']
half=second
NB: In the nominative and accusative, this number governs the genitive singular of the noun. In all of the other cases, it governs the plural of the noun.
NB2: The declension reminds me of the quasi-extinct Dual. Cf: два • (m, n), две (f) 'two', and о́ба (m, n), о́бе (f) 'both', as does the special Case governances.

:grc:

ημιόλιος (m) ; ημιολία (f) ; ημιόλιον (n)
[hε.mjo.ljos] [hε.mjo.li:.a] [hε.mjo.ljon]
half.whole<ADJZ>

In German, there is also a regular construction: eineinhalb (one-and-half), analogous to zweieinhalb, dreieinhalb, viereinhalb.... "anderthalb" is still more common, both in written and spoken language, but "eineinhalb" quickly closes up.

:chn: Mandarin

In Mandarin, the structure is 一 "one" + classifier + "半 half".

一个半星期 yī gè bàn xīngqī - one and a half weeks
一家半博物馆 yī jiā bàn bówùguǎn - one and a half museums
一年半 yī nián bàn - one and a half years

:con: Yélian

In Yélian, there is a separate word for "one and a half": meirai, derived from "mia è rai" > "mierai" > "meirai"

Queranaran has words for "more than half" and "less than half" of a group - - - not what you're looking for!

Talarian doesn't have proper singular forms for naturally dual nouns. You'd have to say half the two-feet.

More to the point, English does have threehalf- usually in connection with some unit of measure or currency. Probably the longest lived is threehalfpence, obviously being worth 1 1/2 d.

If we include colloquial variants there is also

einundhalb
ein-und-halb
one-and-half

This one is the most regular of the three constructions. I often hear it in colloquial speech, where it is also used for higher numbers.

:idn:
The construction I heard is the following:

satu se-tengah
one one-half

:con: Ḋraħýl Rase

ṫak ṡaga
three half

Mixed fractions are not allowed, since conjunction is done through juxtaposition, which could be confused with a coëfficient.

:con: Arka

ko o tifa
one and half

... At least that's my best guess at it.
