Re: Þrinn: The Mid-Germanic Language

it's beyond my full grasp, but this language looks really cool; you've obviously put a lot of effort into it

Re: Syntax symmetry

Hi, sorry for the delay... I like the idea of keeping different positions for different modifier types - should provide more balance. Would they reverse based on which side of the sentence's center position they are on? I think splitting apart is better than doubling, because it gives the chance to ...

Syntax symmetry

So this somewhat weird notion popped up - a language that requires a palindromic syntax... Assume these parts of speech M modifier N noun V verb/particle N _ V _ N (1) they threw balls V <-M _ N _ N _ M-> V (2) hit rudely he those innocently walking M-> N _ V <-M-> V _ N <-M (3) strong soldiers fend...

Re: Naming fingers

It's a good idea, OTʜᴇB. I've been a little wary about assigning any sort of number to the fingers, since I didn't consider them to have any inherent numerical order. But one does need to choose some order for a numerical system, which implies one for the fingers as well. Although I started this thr...

Re: Naming fingers

The more I think about this (called "2" in the post above), the more I like it: priest - pinky The priest's power is mostly hidden or humble. The priest may be on the edge of the order, due to higher education and unusual lifestyle. The signet ring is traditionally worn on the pinky. hero - ring The...

Re: Naming fingers

Hi, OTʜᴇB! Hmm, I could see thumb as hero, since it's needed to fully grasp something, as during an emergency, acrobatics, or when using tools. I could also see king as the middle finger, since a queen/king is at the protected power center and generally considered 'highest'. Farmer for index seems s...

Re: Naming fingers

Brilliant response - thanks so much. I think I'll swap priest and king, because it fits my other schema better. The justification is that rings can be magical, and kings give direction and expose themselves. The bit about using the thumb to plant seeds was perfect. I had a vague idea about using the...

Naming fingers

Hi, in my conlang, I wish to associate the fingers of the hand with something like the following roles:
- peasant
- farmer
- king
- hero
- priest

Which finger would you associate with each? If possible, describe why - thanks
